Clicking KNEES

My knees click all of the time when going up stairs or putting weight on them while bent. Gross, clicking/grinding sounds. No pain but feels strange. Loud enough for my hubby to hear every night when we walk up the stairs. This has gone on for about 2 years in one knee and 1 year in both.

Anyone else have this or know anything about it?

What can I do next?

Ditto what Abbie said, when I'd had "clicking" for a little over a year in one knee I asked my doctor and she said it was osteoarthritis. Now they both do it :-/

Does it sound like bubble wrap? Both mine do that -- I had a doc explain it. The underside of the kneecap has become bumpy, not smooth. He said it's a precursor to arthritis.

For me, it was the first sign of osteoarthritis.

Yeah. I actually went to physical therapy (because that's what my wonderful HMO made me do prior to letting me go see an orthopedic specialist). The PT said sometimes that noise is caused by ligaments that are too tight. He said stretching can help a lot of people (sadly it didn't help me, though). Stretch your hamstrings and quads every day and see if that helps after a few weeks.

For me, the orthopedic surgeon didn't find anything either! Hmm, weird, huh?

Okay, so then in a completely unrelated doctor's visit, I found out my thyroid is under-active (waaaaay underactive). My doctor put me on meds for that, and lo and behold! My knees stopped clicking! Evidently low thyroid can lead to joint problems including low fluid in the knees - hence the popping noises. So once the thyroid meds kicked in, my knees started sounding much better. Who knew?!

my knees clicked because i had petella femoral pain syndrome. It only hurt when I was running for exercise and if I pushed it too hard had to walk down the stairs backwards because of the pain. The origination of it in my case was collapsing arches (flat feet) which in turn put my knee caps off track. If i had let it go my hips would have been next to start hurting as well. I am resolving mine with foot arch supports. Though I went to an orthopedics and physical therapists, it was the podiatrist that helped me most with my knee pain and off track pettella.

I have been getting that since I was in my teens.

Mine hurt like hell now. Especially when it rains. <--- There ya go. Just like Brigette said.

I suggest this is a question for medical people. I'd call the advice nurse at an orthopedic office. If this is a precursor to arthritis or some other disability you want to know how to protect your knees.
