My baby was born 10 months ago with a cleft lip. Fell free to contact me with your questions or comments. We found out at our 20 week ultrasound, so we had plenty of time to prepare, but I know it was very scary when I initially found out about it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Our son had surgery to repair his bilateral incomplete cleft lip on his 8 week birthday. The surgery took just over an hour, and he had a sterile strip between his nose and upper lip, stitches in the bed of both nostrols and dissolvable stitches on the inside and outside of his upper lip. He didn't have much swelling, and breastfed immediatly after surgery, in the recovery room infact. After a few days on Tylonal with Codiene we switched to regular Tylonal. We left the sterile strip on for one week, then removed it and had a follow up visit to the surgeon two weeks later, followed by one three months later, and we'll have another at 1 year. Since then he has had additional hearing tests that have all come out fine. He seems to be getting his teeth fine, he has his two upper teeth and four on the bottom. He does have a notch in his gum where the worse of the two clefts were on his lip, but we'll just have to wait and see what happens with the tooth that should come in there. Our son's speech, hearing, orthodontics, etc. will be monitored until he is three years old by our "cleft team" at St. Johns Hospital, Kids Plastic Surgery, Dr. Jeffrey Marsh. We couldn't be happier with the result. I didn't know much about clefts before my son was born with one, I was very surprised to find out how common they are.

Hi J.! My daughter of 10 months was also born with a cleft lip (unilateral on her left side). They told me when I was 5 mo pregnant but I was still very worried until she was born. She had her surgery at 4 months, and will probably have another on her first birthday. She is still so beautiful in my eyes....I just worry about other kids and teasing once she gets older. Email me if you would like to chat some more!
Best of luck with your little one...I know what it is like.
J.

J., did you have your baby's lip fixed? My son's orthodontist is the best in the world and he is also the head of malofacial surgery at children's mercy hospital. He teaches and is absolutely one of the most gentle men i have ever met. He runs the foundation for children with cleft lips. I believe is called Beautiful Smiles, or something similiar. Let me know if you would like his name and number. Every picture i have seen is amazing!!!

Wow! I am honestly surprised that they told you at your ultrasound. My youngest was born with a 'nose tag' which basically means that she looked like she had a booger stuck on her nose all the time. We were fortunate that we had a wonderful pediatric plastic surgeon back in NC that did the surgery. She may have to have surgery again in about 2 years to help balance it out.
I noticed on my ultrasound pics that she had a nose tag but didn't know it at the time.
Have you contacted a pediatric plastic surgeon? That was the most frustrating for us is insurance covering it and finding a pediatric surgeon that would even operate on her.
How are you handling this? I was very emotional when some people said comments to me like,"What's wrong with her nose?" It hurt sometimes. How are you doing though?

My daughter was born almost 8 1/2 mo ago, 5/19, and was born with a cleft soft palate (the hole is in the roof of her mouth but no problems with her hard palate or lip) and Pierre Robin Sequence (small jaw). I had 2 ultrasounds, the last one was when I was 38 weeks, and no one noticed her cleft or small jaw until she was born. It would have been nice to have known prior to her being born in case she would have had difficulties breathing, but otherwise there really wasn't anything we could have done differently. It was scary because she had to be transported to the Children's hospital shortly after being born, but thankfully she hasn't had any problems due to the cleft or PRS. She will be having surgery to close the cleft around a year. How about your daughter? Does she have any other problems due to her cleft?

This is a little off the subject of cleft lips, but I saw in your bio that you are a wedding photographer? My sister is getting married in November in Wentzville, Missouri and is in the process of looking for a photographer. Are you close to this area? Or would you be interested in talking to her? If you can let me know, I would appreciate it.

Thank you,
J.

My son was born with a unilateral cleft lip. We didnt find out till after he was born. He had his first surgery when he was 4 mo. old and one more when he is about 4 or 5yrs old. He had his surgery at childrens mercy south. I could not be happier with the results, the Dr. did such a great job. I can not even really see the scar unless your looking for it. We go to clinics one time a yr. to see all the Dr. He is 22 mo. now.
Let me know if anyone wants to talk more about this.

I don't have any questions, just a comment. A Prayer if I may.

In the name of Jesus, I ask you to watch over this child and his parents and let him have a successful surgery or whatever it is they intend to do for cosmetic surgery. Bless them and keep them, in your mighty, mighty name I pray, Amen
