I had this problem this summer. My son sleptwalked and peed in his bedroom. I didn't know about it for a few days, and hoo-boy was the stench unbearable!

I found good old fashioned baking soda worked wonders. Sprinkle it liberally on the carpet and let it sit for a bit before vacuuming it back up. I used my hands to sprinkle it about, crushing the chunks while distributing the soda. It's inexpensive, perfectly safe for pets and children, and won't result in an olfactory lasagna of conflicting odors.

I'd recommend Petzyme. It worked really well with the cat urine on our wood floor and has worked for my son's little piddle spots during our attempts at potty training.

Borax - it's a powder available in a box in the laundry aisle. It worked for us during potty training, and I still have some left for tossing in the laundry.

Hello! I cannot recommend highly enough Bissell Pet Pro... It's found by the vacuums in Walmart, twin silver canisters with a spray nozzle, pink label. This stuff got male cat pee out of my hiking backpack that I carry my daughter in. And six months later, it hasn't come back. It took SEVERAL applications, but less than one can. Try it! :)

Hi G.:

The best way to get the smell of urine out of a carpet is to rent a steam cleaner from Home Depot or Lowes. You can get a shampoo with a special scent to hide any left over smells of urine. We used that and it worked on our carpets. The lilac scent worked well. It takes a little time to dry though. So, you might want to leave the house afterward for a few hours. Then put fans on all the carpets.

Make a solution of white vinegar and water, let it soak in, and then blot with a towel. That should work for human urine. Pet urine can be a little more stubborn but try this first. If it doesn't work the first time, do it a second time with a stronger concentration of vinegar.

I use a cup of vinegar in a gallon of water to do my kitchen floor, but I would use a higher concentration for the carpet.

Pet stores and supermarkets sell deodorizers but that just masks the smell usually and doesn't actually neutralize it. Once it wears off, the urine smell can return. It can create allergy problems too.

Good luck.

I usually pre-treat with hot water & OxyClean and then follow up with our steam cleaner - works great!

There are a couple available at Wal-Mart or a pet store that work awesome.
You are looking for a natural enzyme that will eat anything organic.. it will die once their food source is gone (the urine).

I found the key, though, is to completely saturate the area with the product. Our cat peed in our car and I kept spraying the area.. but it didn't work. Then I dumped the half the bottle on the seat cushion where she peed.. and now it's gone!
