Cleaning Question - York,PA

Can I put a teddy bear through the laundry machine and dryer? Teddy is getting pretty smelly, but I don't think it's a safe idea to use Febreeze or something on him since he gets chewed on so much. He's in good shape except for the matted fur. Anyone washed and dried a teddy bear successfully?

What can I do next?

I just did this a couple of days ago with my DD's favorite bear (I just threw him in right along with her clothes). He came out just fine. I have front-loading washer and I dried on low heat. He smells so much better now!

I wash all of my daughter's stuffed animals! Hell, they have those little taggie dolls, and my son's (9 month old) gets washed every other day! He sucks on it like a pacifier!

I don't put them in the dryer, just the washer.

If it won't survive the washing machine, I don't want it in my house. :)

So yes, I throw everything in whether it was made to be washed or not. If I'm really worried, I wash it on delicate in cold water in a lingerie bag. Be careful with the dryer, though, and don't dry it on anything above low because the fur can melt from the heat and become much less soft (like fleece blankets). I also try to only buy animals for the kids that are made for the washing machine, but again, I toss stuff in all the time that is surface wash only, even things that make music, and they have so far been just fine.

Yes, throw it in the wash... also, if you know where it came from, see if you can get a second one (if this is the favorite)... I have duplicates of each of my boys' special friends, so I can throw one in the wash whenever it's convenient (rather than trying to sneak it away and hurry it back)...

If you don't want to surface clean Teddy, you can always put him in a pillow case, make sure you tie the pillow case up and wash him on the gentle cycle.Or use a garmet bag. Put him in the dryer for 10 min on low, then let him air dry the rest of the time. That's how we clean our Teddy and even some of our Dollies! Lol! Good luck!

I have. On gentle for the wash. Low for dry and let it airdry or 'fluff' dry the rest of the way.

my 2 year old rotates about 8 different stuffies and they each get washed at least once a week. We just throw them in the washing machine with his clothes. Line dry only. they dry faster than you could imagine. If you sneak it away from your son after he's fast asleep, wash it and put it on a rack before you go to bed, it will be dry long before he wakes up. if you can get it back in his bed before he wakes up, he'll never even know it was missing!

Yup! Just make sure that there are no mechanisms (if it talks or lights-up you can't wash it). I also put my son's plush toys in a lingerie (mesh) bag to keep them from getting beat-up in the washer!

I put my son's stuffed cow lovey, in a mesh lingerie bag, then wash it and dry it in that. It is fine.

I wash stuffed friends all the time.

Trick: Put bandaids over plastic eyes. It means you have to fingernail the adhesive off afterwards, but it keeps them from getting scratched in the washer or dryer.

Trick: Always dry on LOW. Med or High can melt fur.

I've had to wash my daughter's favorite animals several times and honestly some have been ruined. =( I've been most successful with washing but line drying or wash but drying on extra low. Good luck!

My 4 y/o LOVES to give his teddy bear a bath in our kitchen sink with a wash cloth and all natural baby soap!!

He'll even wrap teddy in a towel to dry him a bit before going in the dryer.

I'll use wet a pillow case and put teddy in the dryer, on low/gentle IN the pillow case.

Teddy is doing fine!

I would put teddy into a pillowcase, knot the top, and then wash him with just a little detergent on the gentle cycle. Then hang him up to dry with the clips on a skirt hanger. We do this twice a year with each of the kids stuffed animals. You may need to do this right after your child falls asleep, and hang him before you go to bed so that he is dry and ready for the morning. Good luck!

I have washed their puppies in the washing machine a few times usually one gentle and then toss them in the dryer on low. If it is build a bear though don't do it. We put ours in the wash after our oldest vomited all over it and it came apart and I ended up with a huge fluff mess that I had to clean out of the washer. It is the only sutffed animal that I ever had this problem with.

use a non-toxic cleaner since it sounds like teddy ends up in the mouth. Hand wash or gentle cycle. I've done that, but I air dried.
