Cleaning Pen off Sheets - Good Tip

I just wanted to share a great tip my mother discovered. If you have pen marks on sheets (or any other material I suppose), just spray it heavily with hairspray, give it a rub, and it comes off!

Has anyone else got any good household tips to share?

Removing pen - you can do the same with straight rubbing alcohol, without having to then wash off the sticky hairspray residue.

I use a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and blue Dawn dish soap in a spray bottle for cleaning many things. It dissolves soap scum in the shower, clears away dried up toothpaste in the sink, removes stains from laundry, cuts through grease on the stove or in the microwave. (Some online instructions say to heat the vinegar. That is completely unnecessary.)

Instead of buying refills for foaming dishsoap, I use regular dish soap in a 1/3 to 2/3 water. Works great for washing hands in the kitchen too, particularly if you're making something oily/greasy. Put the water in first, then the soap, to avoid making foam while filling. Put the top on then tilt back & forth gently to mix.

Thanks for passing this on. It's probably the alcohol content of the hair spray that acts as a solvent for the ink.

LuckyMom, I saturate a paper towel, or a larger piece of old bedsheet, in white vinegar, a mild acid, and slap it onto the area I want to clean. Let it sit for 20 minutes, spritzing with more vinegar to keep it moist. Then I scrape the softened gunk off pretty easily with a window scraper. I actually use a scraper with a firm plastic blade. (I can't tolerate the smells of heavy-duty cleansers, but vinegar is non-toxic, and the smell goes away when you're done.) It the build-up is really thick, you may need to repeat a few times to get all of it.

I've heard of that one. I've also heard you can use rubbing alcohol to remove pen marks from clothing but I've never tried it.

My favorite tip is using blue Dawn dish soap as laundry stain remover. You just put Dawn on the spot and leave it until laundry day. Wash in cold and the stain is gone. If any stain remains, use more Dawn and wash in warm or hot, depending on the fabric tolerance.

Does anyone have a great way to get gunk (soap residue and calcium deposits) off clear glass shower doors?

I was surprised and pleased to learn that toothpaste really does get permanent marker off of tables. I thought my table was ruined, but the Sharpie wiped off easily with a dry rag and toothpaste.

For calcium deposits--take a long strip of toilet paper, fold it over a few times so you have a piece that is about 4-5 layers thick, and soak it with white vinegar. Wrap it around the bases of your faucets (or anywhere else you have calcium buildup), squish it down, and leave it for a couple of hours. Remove the toilet paper, then scrub the deposits with a brush. It's amazing how easily all that gunk comes off after the vinegar soak!
