Cleaning a Mattress

My 6 year old on rare occasion still wets the bed. Tonight was one of those nights, I just changed his sheets and the pee had soaked THROUGH the (supposedly) waterproof mattress pad :(

I'm so bummed! His bed is pretty new. Without going into the garage to get him a (brrr cold!) sleeping bag, I put a thick towel over the wet spot and remade the bed and will have to deal with it in the a.m.

How do I clean it? It will be dry pee... will just laundry soap work? Should I get febreeze for after I clean it? It seems like if I get it scrubbed with a good cleaner that the smell would be gone, right?

And, I suppose I need new mattress covers if the one I have isn't working anymore... maybe I've washed it too many times?

Thanks for your help. Now I'm off to bed. Hopefully no one else will have any 'issues" :)

J.

What can I do next?

You can get some Resolve or Spot Shot cleaner and spray it on the spot, leave it on a minute and then scrub it out well, and that should do the trick for you. I would Febreeze or Lysol afterwards just for that extra good smell.

Yes, you should get a new mattress cover, and maybe you just have to replace it every few months or so if you wash it often.

The other ladies have covered cleaning, but as for the mattress cover being washed too many times... unless it is a waterproof one that the vinyl on the underside has cracked from being put in the dryer, it should do what it is designed to do. IS it a waterproof pad? What I did was buy a waterproof vinyl mattress pad, and put a regular one on top of that, then the sheet. NOTHING got through that. And the regular mattress pad on top of the vinyl kept the "vinyl noise" to a minimum and my son from getting damp from sweating due to the vinyl not breathing...

You can get the enzyme stuff you use for cat and dog urine and spray that on the mattress. I've used it before for both urine and vomit and it works really well.

Many boys continue to have accidents and wear pull ups until the reach puberty. The male hormones stop the night accidents. At his age is it extremely common.
I always put baking soda over the pee spot to take out the smell. Put it on thick. I don't use chemicals and poisons to clean.

You have to soak up as much wet pee as you can since it soaked through. Put it in the sun for a day, that really helps.

Also, put a vinyl plastic sheet under the mattress pad.

Some good steps to try as well:

I usually use Resolve or baking soda, or vinegar for this kind of stuff.

I'd soak it up and then put baking soda on it for a bit and then use your steam cleaner to clean it.
