So, my kitchen sink drain on the garbage disposal side smells really bad. I have tried to pour bleach down it, rinse with extremely hot water, and grind up orange and lemon peels. It still smells. Please help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I tried the baking soda and vinegar and it worked for about a week. The smell came back, so I did the baking soda and vinegar followed by lemon peels and ice. This time it didn't work. However, I did notice that the smell permeates the room only when I run the dishwasher (once or twice a day). I think I might have to look into some sort of chemical drain cleaner.

I agree with the baking soda and vinegar, but with mine to maintain it keeping ordor down is the dishsoap I use. I have a dishwasher but still do some by hand and i use lemon Joy and that really helps the drain odor. Good luck.

I agree with the baking soda and vinegar option. Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and vinegar is a cleaner. I used it to unclog a drain not that long ago. It worked beautifully.
Just pour the baking soda down the drain and let it sit for a while (about 10 minutes). Then pour in some vinegar. Obviously you get the volcano effect and the baking soda bubbles up when the vinegar hits it. Chase all that with hot water. Just let the hot water tap run for a couple minutes to clean out the drain and wash everything away.
Hopefully that will fix the odor.

I've usually poured baking soda down the drain, let it sit for about 10 minutes, then followed up with vinegar. After the bubbles subside (about 10 minutes), run ice cubes through it. If it still smells, do it again. If it still smells, do lemon peels.

Being that my husband is a plumber-Don't do anything more! The chemicals and the stuff you already put down there will not help and could cause more damage. Call a plumber. I know they can be expensive, however if you do more damage, you will end up paying even more.

I agree with the baking soda and vinegar, But depending on your garbage disposal you may have to dump it.. On the other hand my brother is a plumber. He is in berrien county. I can ask him what to do or even have him come take a look if you would like.

I do not know of any tricks or specific products but maybe check out a Home Depot, Menards, or similar store and ask for a product to clean the garbage disposal. There are some commerical products that could help maybe so others they can point out, but read the directions first before buying, one that I bought says you can not use any drain for 6 hours (well in a business that shut downs that is ok but in a house that is harder to do).

I was once told by a garbage disposal repair guy to clean it by pouring ice cubes and half cut up lemon in, then turn on with cold water running. He mentioned an amount of ice, but can not remember the amount... when I do it I usually put in enough till it is full (before turning it on) then repeat if needed.

Hope you get something that works!

I have the same problem at my house. I tried the baking soda and vinegar and it worked a bit but not completely. I found this drain and trap cleaner that the previous owners left and it worked like a dream!

The product label says ROEBIC (i think that's the brand) K-67 Bacterial Drain and Trap Cleaner. It's save for plastic pipes, garbage disposals, and the envirnment.

It is supposed to be used once a month to help prevent clogs (which will cause ordors). It's great for septic tanks and cesspool systems too. All you do is pour a solution of the cleaner and hot water down the drains at night before you go to bed and don't run the water until morning and you're done!

I used it for the first time a few days ago. Our bathroom smelled SOOOOO BAAAAD. Like rotten eggs or something. It was so pungent that I couldn't sleep. I decided to pour this stuff in and my morning I couldn't smell a thing. I used it in the kitcken too. My drains seem to be running better as well. They were getting kind of slow.

Good Luck. Hope you get the smell out!

First, plug the other side of the sink.
Pour 1/4 to 1/2 cup baking soda into drain, use spoon if necessry. Then slowly pour in 1 cup distilled vinegar and let it bubble up. Rinse with hot water.

HI- I would try hot vinegar and baking soda, not bleach.
Bleach is very toxic. I also have heard of putting ice cubes and oranges in and grinding it up after the ice melts- never tried it though.
Good Luck,
M.
