O.O.
I doubt anything would prevent build up.
When I had a gas stove with those grates on the burners, I just put them in the hot soapy water when I cleaned up the kitchen after dinner.
We have cast iron burners (the grates/covers) on our stove and the grease tends to build up. They are NOT coated in enamel. What have you found that successfully cleans the grease and helps prevent build up?

Put them in the dishwasher
i soak 'em in dawn and hot water every now and then, and then give them a good scrub with a scrubbie. and sometimes i'll put them through the dishwasher.
i don't know anything that prevents them from getting cruddy.

The only thing I've done is routinely run them through the dishwasher. I don't worry about them unless I spill food on them.
You'll need ammonia, a scrubbing pad, zip lock bags big enough to hold the burners (1 per bag) and a dry towel.
