I spray our doorknobs all the time with lysol to disinfect them. Well yesterday when I did it turned the knob cloudy. If I take my finger I can scratch it off, but I will be there all day if I do that. Any suggestions on how to remove this film without scratching the doorknob?

Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

It sounds like over time, you have removed the outer layer of the door knob. Why do you spray them all the time? Do you have a lot of people over all the time? Sick ones? Does someone have an auto-immune disorder? Of course you want to avoid spreading germs but be aware of how much chemicals are in your home and how they might effect your family. If the spray can remove the outer layer of a doorknob, think what it is doing to your family.

Sounds like chemical buildup (yuck) and that you are using way too much Lysol. Try wiping them with vinegar and water or just spraying some Lysol after someone has been sick.

Like BB mentioned that if this is what’s happening to your doorknobs think about how it is affecting your bodies.

I marked B B's answer as helpful but wish I could have marked it a dozen times - I wholeheartedly agree with the answer!

Maybe get a new doorknob and instead of lysol use water/vinegar mixture - it will shine them up. I have two kids that no matter how much we wipe their hands off everyday there seems to be stickiness on the knobs where they openned it!!!! The water/vinegar mixture works well!!

Maybe try an old toothbrush? Just a thought!

I would also switch to Clorox wipes. It sounds like you are either wearing away the sealant on the doorknob or have a build-up problem.

I get it, though. We "wipe" all of the door knobs, phones, and "buttons" weekly. Gross!

Looks like you're going to have to move! LOL

Try a spray cleaner like Clorox green. That's what I'd try.

Maybe use an old shower pouf?
