Clean the Shower Pan?

Hi moms,

I am having a really tough time cleaning my shower pan...any suggestions? Usually soft scrub with bleach cleans most everything, but it's just not cutting it. I've even plugged the drain and poured in bleach, allowing it to sit overnight...still no luck! Does anyone have a sure fire cleaning concoction? It's a light grey shower pan, about 7 years old. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi all, thank you for all the suggestions! I'm going to try them all! Thank you to those of you that described what a shower pan is. Even though the walls are Corion I think the pan is probably fiberglass. Hopefully I didn't ruin it with the softscrub!

First, use a good spray/foaming spray, leave it on for twenty minutes...and not just a light spray. My mom taught me this (and I swear, I always wondered how her showers were spotless, year after year.) She pretty much uses half to a whole bottle each time. At least half a bottle...she really coats it.

So, come back in 20 minutes, and rinse and scrub a bit. Then sprinkle it with Comet...a lot of comet. Then let that sit for just a minute or two, and really scrub it good with a scrubby sponge.

Final step, spray it with Windex and wipe it down and it will really shine!

Now...when I say use half a bottle, I'm talking about a tub with all the walls. If you're just cleaning the bottom of the shower, it won't take nearly as much...but really cover every inch of it.

I know this sounds strange but try a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. We bought a house with stand up shower in the downstairs guest bathroom. The pan, as you call it, was grey/yellowish and I tried everything to get it clean! No amount of scrubbing or cleaner (comet, bleach, kaboom, etc...) could get it clean. It looked gross and stained for years until my SIL suggested a magic eraser. It was unbelievable!! The thing looked brand new by the time I was done. Strange but true!

The shower pan is the bottom of the shower. When building, they put in the bottom of the shower stall and then the sides so water will run down the sides and onto the pan and out the drain. It's somewhat like a giant cake pan. Tubs don't have a pan as they are usually all one piece. The pan can be covered with tile or whatever after that. I think soft scrub and cleansers are too abrasive and the finish of the shower has been scratched and lost it's shine. I use scrubbing bubbles, and there are other cleaners that aren't hard on the surfaces. We had a full tub/shower refinished by Miracle Method a few years ago and it looks brand new. They told us to never use anything abrasive and soft scrub was first on the list of no nos. Hope you can find a way to make it shine again.

I have also not heard the term shower pan. Please describe it? What material is it made of. What size is it? Does it just cover the bottom of a shower or is it a part of a tub?

If it's made of ceramic or a synthetic substance bleach will remove the finish and cause it to be next to impossible to get clean.

We have a ceramic tub and clean it by poring on an inexpensive shampoo and leaving it on overnight. Does great!

I don't think ceramic is the right word. It's cast iron with a finish.

Have you tried using CLR. It's supposed to be really good at removing mineral deposits. You might want to try it.

Hello S.. The only thing i know that works best is lemi shine. You can find it at walmart or target. It is very strong though. Wet your shower pan & then sprinkle on the lemi shine & let it sit for about 1/2 hour or less. Take a good scrub brush & brush & wash away. Lemi shine is also great for dishwashers. We have hard water & we hate it & lemi shine also works on shower doors. Hope you find it as best as i did.
Blessings

I've heard great things about dishwashing tablets.. you could try to plug the shower fill it with really hot water and throw a couple of dishwashing tablets and let it soak for awhile.. dont' know how well it will work but i have a friend that swears by it when dealing with tubs and showers..
