We were at a family Birthday party and my 3 year old was going down in the finished basement and lost her feet on about 4 -5 steps, Resulting in a left shoulder fracture, we took her to the Hospital and they said they dont do a thing about it and that it will heal itself. they did give us a sling for the day and said motrin and tylonal. I am wondering if anyone could share with me their expierence and give me any tips on sleeping, etc... How long they think it took? I am hopeing by x-mas she will feeel much better? I feel like she has had so many trips to the hospital, 2 with virus and now this.

What can I do next?

My daughter broke hers at 4 when the dog knocked her down in the yard. She wore the sling round the clock for about a week then we went back to the DR and he said only when she was at school. I think it was about 3 weeks before it was healed well enough for her to move it around. In the mean time we went to the thrift store and bought button up shirts and jammies for her to make it easier to dress. Their bones heal very quickly at this age is what the DR told us. I think I made a bigger deal of it than she did:) She is 8 now and has had no problems so far with it.

I dont have any experience with this injury.. but I recommend motrin and not tylenol.

Motrin works better for pain and fever. It also reduces inflammation and there is sure to be inflammation if there is a bone that is injured.

dont be alarmed if the injured area feels warmer than the rest of the body. When I broke my elbow. My entire arm was much warmer than the rest of me while it was healing.

While I was giving birth to my daughter and pushing her out, she ended up with a fractured clavical. The doctor put my newborn in a sling for a few weeks (3-4) and it healed up fine. She had to sleep on her back, but other than that, everything was ok. She's 13 now and has never had any problems.

My younger brother had this injury when he was growing up, although he was a little bit older. She'll be in pain for a little while, but being so young, she'll bounce right back. I'm thinking that they suggested both tylenol and motrin to keep the pain under control. You can switch them up every 3-4 hours if she needs them. I would have her sleep with the sling for the first few nights to remind her to sleep on her back and then just see how she tolerates things during the day. The clavicle is a very immobile bone, so the sling isn't really going to keep it in place, it's going to just help her keep still if she's in pain. I'm sure that she'll be back to normal within a week or two.
