My daughter was 6 weeks old and she had to be put to sleep to have a CT scan of head. She was having, what we thought were, seizures.

I was terrified of her being sedated, but everything was ok. She was drowsy when she woke up, but it was just typical (anyone who was sedated the way she was would have been drowsy.)

If the doctor says this is what needs to happen, then I'm sure your son will be ok. Doctors don't like sedated children if it's not absolutely necessary.

*hugs*

30 years ago my husband was put completely under at 1 week old to have open heart surgery because of massive heart failure...that was 30 years ago...I'm sure they've gotten a lot better at it since then...and he's fine :) I also have several friends who have had babies put to sleep immediately following birth for emergency surgeries. That being said - my little one was put to sleep at 6 months old for surgery...and I was still nervous...just so you know you're normal :).

My preemie was put under at 5 weeks, which was before he was supposed to even be born, for hernia repairs. He was groggy and I bawled like a baby when they took him back for sedation (we were not allowed in the room for that), but everything turned out just fine!

I question if there really is need for GA? This is very minor surgery and surely takes no longer than the original circumcision? LA is administered for that in almost all infant procedures these days. I wonder if the doctor was trying to put you off?

I wouldn't be dissuaded though. The good reasins you had for deciding to circumcise your son in the first place are still valid and having come this far you want it to be right and look right. If you don't have this done it will always niggle you and probably him in later life.

Good luck!

This will be monor surgery, so they will be most likely doing only inhaled gas that is easy to revert, and they are always monitoring all the vital signs and oxygen levels while they do it. He probably will get a preop check up with his pediatrician to clear him for surgery, and you can always have the anesthesiologist sit down and explain what kind of sedation they will be giving. Just make sure he is absolutely in good health before going in, so he should be totally recovered from colds and things like that before getting any kind of sedation/anesthesia. The one thing I can tell you is that the younger they are for any kind of surgery in that particular area of the body, the better! Newborns have no problems with it, but older kids are more aware and it can be horrible for them, much worse for teens or adults! Good luck!

This is why my second and third son are not circumcised!!! My first son was circumcised, and the skin under the tip became reattached over time. Our pediatrician didn't seem too concerned and said it would grow and detach with time, which it did but as it did, there became one tiny opening that made me realize there was a rim of "cheese" in the closed area and so with every diaper change I obsessed and tried to clean it and gently open it and put Vaseline on it and felt terrible that I had invited this into our little world.
Sons # 2 & 3 have No-drama-penises! LOL!
Good luck with your son! I'll be sending you good thoughts and energy! :)

I agree with Elsa - it's probably gas and not general anesthesia. Double check with the doctor.
