My 6 year old had a re-circ this summer, it looks beautiful and the healing wasn't so bad. He doesn't complain of pain and now we don't have to worry about whether he is able to keep it clean.
We used Dr. Baseman in Plano.

Hi, have any of you had boys that have needed a circ revision? We are debating one for my almost five year old son, but I would like some input from anyone who's dealt with this before. Thanks!

I'm not experiencing any problems with my sons (2yo and 6mo) but thanks for posting this, I'll keep a watch out. I never knew this could happen.
We are in the same boat. I have a 5 year old that will have in corrected in December. He recently had a PAINFUL one month infection. I am nervous about the "repair" but I do not want him to have to go through this later in life. They did not take enough skin off the first time, when he was a newborn.
My son had one done just almost a year ago (he was 3 at the time). He had a few other issues in that region, so he had to be put under for the surgery. He did not have any problems with the surgery and now it looks great and you can't even tell anything was done.
Our sons is being done next month. He just turned 3 a couple weeks ago. When he was born at 36 weeks they told us they'd look and make sure he was big enough since some preemies aren't. They went ahead and did it. Now it's basically hidden..almost like it wasn't even done. It's covered by the extra skin. We wanted it done as soon as possible but have gotten 3 opinions just to be sure it's for the best..and we really want it fixed.
We are using Dr Baker at Childrens Hospital in Dallas, she came very highly recommended by 2 other Dr's.
Not my son, but my father-in-law had issues many, many years ago. Then had an infection as an adult and had to go in for surgery. It sounds like the same thing.
Anyway, his advice to me when we had our son, was get the circumscion done and get it done right.
My son had his done at age 2, and I wish we'd done it earlier like suggested. Used Dr. Strand across from Presbyterian, though I think he is up in the Plano office more often. He had a quick recovery, and has no problems at all now. If I had to do it over again I would have not had my OB do the surgery but would have taken him to a ped urologist after birth.
My son had this done last summer. We took him to Dr. Snodgrass in Frisco (pediatric urologist). It was done quickly and my son only needed Tylenol for a couple of days. We were vey happy with the results. good Luck!
I'm curious on the reason for the revision... I've got a little boy that I've considered doing the same thing for, but it's only for the "looks" of it. I know that may sound weird or whatever, but I just don't think the original doctor took quite enough off... She keeps telling me "he'll grow into it." I just really don't like that reason! I know my rambling doesn't help you, but I do know the older they get, the more it hurts! I would do it soon if you're going to. If it's not for health reasons, you may need to check with your insurance carrier and see if this is something they would cover or have the doctor do it. My pediatrician was referring me to a plastic surgeon to have it done because she said they have to be under general anesthesia for it. Maybe some doctors are different, I'm not sure, but definitely get a consult and weigh all the pros and cons! Let me know how it works out b/c I'd really like to know more about the whole thing for my son! ____@____.com
Dr. Adam Baseman in Plano and also offices out of Dallas across the street from Presby.
My son had surgery when he was 1. He was born at 29 weeks and was circ. right before he left the hospital. We took him in at 1 for bladder reflux and the urologist noticed that he had a hypospadius and needed to be re-circ. The surgery did not take long, and I am glad we did it at such a young age.
Hi, we did it when my son was a newborn for, they would have put him down for the surgery after a month old and we were afraid of it. I have heard all kind of comments but for us, it is great. He always keeps it clean and he hasn't complaint about it. No infections or anything like it. Took around 1 week to heal, so be patient. Look for a pediatrician that belives in it and does it, so your kid will feel more comfortable. Good luck!
G.,
My son is now 9 he was born in minnesota and had his first circumcision at birth then a revision at one month old. recently he got an infection so we went to a pediatric urologist in plano and he opted not to do another revision he stated that with time he will grow and doing a revision will make his skin too tight and uncomfortable. he did however do a minor office surgery to remove some pockets from the sutures he had from the revision. he said they use sutures in a revision and often the skin heals before the sutures dissolve and that added to his infection.
so in my opinion i say are a few doctors and compare the information you get it may be like me where they dont think its best!
i still am not sure but they are the professionals and have seen more than i have;-)
good luck
Hi, WOW you have your hands full! When my son was born he was not able to be circumsized. So when he was about a month old we had it done at Cook's. Then when he was I think around 11 months we had to get the revision done. The Dr. said that he just had way too much fat in that area, which is kinda funny since my son has no fat on the rest of his body. But, we thought we were going to have to have it done again before he started school, but as he grew the fatty area went away. I would say to get it done while he is young. I was told that if it was'nt done that he could have alot of issues as an adult.
My son had it last year when he was 8. We didn't know it needed a revision until we took him to the urologist for bedwetting. They told us if we didn't do it now, he wouldn't be able to have a successful erection as an adult.
The surgery wasn't as bad as we thought. He did well and we had a pediatric urologist do it. He only missed one day of school b/c we did it on a holiday weekend.
If he needs it, it's best to do it now.
Dr. Pinto, a pediatric urologist, at Cooks in Fort Worth did my son...he was about 5..now 13 and never had any problems. We noticed his when he went through a growth spurt. He would tell me that it hurt. A piece of skin had reattached and was pulling as he grew. He also had a very small opening that Dr. Pinto corrected at the same time. My son got so excited the first time he urinated after the surgery because it didn't just come out in a small stream..the dr. told us that there was a percentage (don't remember the number) of boys that has the same problem as my son with the reattachment and another percentage (again don't remember) that had to have the opening made larger. My son just happened to have both problems...they were great at Cooks...
good luck
