My son was circumcised before leaving the hospital. When I took him for his well baby check, the pediatrician said they cut him too short. Has this happened to anybody else? Is there something that can or needs to be done?

What can I do next?

This happens all the time. TMI to follow:

My husband has about 2 inches of puckered scar line that runs from the base of his head down his shaft. Many, many men have similar (ranging from 1/2 inch to several inches). For some men i've known, it creates "bends" in their penises... where the scar didn't stretch evening.

Scar softening cream, applied daily until the end of puberty. Yup, for the next 20 years or so. Make sure that it is applied at night as well. All boys from infancy on get erections at night during certain phases of their sleep AND when then need to pee. So night time is the absolute best time for it to be slathered on good and thick.

In extreme cases, surgery is warranted... but usually scar softening cream & lotion.

It's not the end of the world. AND The upside for your son, is that he will actually have a medical reason to masturbate as he gets older (because obviously the scar has to stretch more when he's hard).

ALSO you're lucky. Many boys don't find out until they HIT puberty, which is painful. Being able to start so young, the scar will be nice and soft by the time he starts to gain some serious length & girth.

I have the exact opposite problem with my oldest son. The dr didn't cut enough, but it is better to have to much than not enough. Just keep it clean and that is all you can do. Nothing needs to be done he will be just fine.

They wouldn't circumcise my last two at the hospital. I just recently took my son to an urologist and I thought he cut him too short. But I figure, the urologist knows what he is doing.

I was told that some pediatricians cut more than others and some look great and some look over done. What could possible be done at this point? Attach some part of it back? Of course not. What did your ped say after his comment? Did he seem concerned? If he simply made the comment, I wouldn't worry. As he grows, it may look fabulous!

we chose to not circumcise so I cannot share from experience...however I would see a few specialists before you start stretching skin and applying lotions...this is a baby and a part of him that he will have for the rest of his life. You dont want to make things worse for him or start putting things on him that may interfere with hormone function etc.

Hi, I'm not sure I understand... too short means not enough, right? In that case, they CAN fix it. I have a nephew, age 9 years! that will have to have his fixed this summer because it wasn't done right in the beginning. I suggest a second opinion, and a urologist can redo it correctly. The sooner the better in my book, but I'm not a doctor. Please don't wait too long, the older he gets, the worse recovery will be. ;o) Good luck. Oh! And if I misunderstood, forgive me. If they cut too much, I am sorry, but I'd still make sure there isn't some type of corrective surgery that could be done now instead of later. I had a hard time with the circ on my son... couldn't watch... I did wait and have it done at my pediatrician's office a few weeks after delivery. I didn't see how they could possibly do it right on something so small at the hospital. Even at a few weeks, I'm not sure how they know how far to go! Take good care.

My son's circumcision was done incorrectly, but the urologist said that he could not do anything about it until he was older than 2. He had us return every 6 months until then so he could monitor any issues. Then at 2 years old he repaired/re-circumcised my son. He told me that it takes 2 years or so for boys to grow enough to really be able to tell if the skin will stretch and have enough extra or not. Until then, I would just check with your pediatrician at each appt. to make sure there are no problems. Then go see a urologist after age 2 if needed. Enjoy that little boy!
