I know that there are many crafty people on Mamapedia, so I need your help. My grandson is in 1st grade & they have to make a Mexican towel poncho for Cinco de mayo & decorate it. I am stumped on the decorating part. I have alot of craft items, but I really don't know how it should look. I know fringe along the bottom, but I need help with the rest.

What can I do next?

Take a towel, old, cut a hole in the middle for his head. Put it on, Decorate it HOWEVER you want. Doesn't need to look anything more than a towel covering the shoulders BRIGHT colors are always nice!!! Doesn't need a ton of decorations. I think its nice that schools observe different cultures holidays. I don't think many people observe memorial day with a outfits and celebrations. Last time I checked I didn't jump for joy, or go wild and crazy on Memorial Day.

I would Google for pictures of a Mexican poncho. Here's a good example: http://bbsimg.ngfiles.com/1/22612000/ngbbs4d8e2dac582f7.jpg

You can buy some colorful paint that is adequate for fabrics and paint some colorful stripes. Don't forget to give him a sombrero!

Maybe put some silver conchos on it ? Look up pictures of Mexican ponchos to see what goes on it.

First of all - what? Hoperfully you're using an old towel and not sacrificing a new pretty towel. I assume the class is celebrating Cinco de Mayo? Is there a reason the school is celebrating a Mexican holiday? Will they be observing Memorial Day at the end of May with equal enthusiasm? I hope so.

As for decorations - most Mexican ponchos used in celebratory situations are brightly colored - often in stripes. A border made of braiding or other colorful trim from the fabric store and a hot glue gun will make it festive - but maybe too expensive. Use fabric or other permanent markers to make colorful decorations. I have to imagine that being true to Mexican style of the 1800's is less important than the children making the decorations colorful and to their personal liking.
