Church in Columbia Area

My 2yr. old daughter and I live in Columbia and are searching for a new church home. We are currently members of Coates Street Presbyterian in Moberly, but I would like to find a church in our own community so she can meet local friends and we won't have to drive an hour. I would love to find a friendly, open-minded congregation that isn't judgy. An active childrens program would also be great. The minister of Coates Street has a real gift for leaving you with a feeling of hope that we can all become better people without making you feel guilty for being imperfect, I would love to find that some where in Columbia. A Presbyterian or Methodist would be closest to what I'm used to, but a non-denominational church could work too. I just can't go to a church with an "our way is the only way" attitude! If anyone knows of a friendly place, please let us know. Many Thanks! S.

Hi S. -
I am am member of the Missouri United Methodist Church downtown Columbia. The church h& congregation are huge -
there are 3 Sunday morning services. The 8:00 am service is held in the Chapel and averages 50 - 70 people. It is the msot casual and the service I like best. The 8:50 service is in the main church but has a children's component and you might want it. The 11:00 am service is also beautiful & the most formal. I know the church has a terrific children's program. You might want to call the church and ask to speak to someone who can better describe the sevices and those that you especially might be interested in. Please contact me at ____@____.com if I can help you in any way.

Hi S.! There is a Church called Woodcrest Chapel here in town. It is pretty big, they have several service times. They have a huge children's ministry, so it would be a great place where your daughter could grow up with many friends from Church. They also have lots of classes to get involved in, but they definitely don't pressure you to join any classes. They are non-denominational. I grew up as a Baptist and my husband grew up as a Catholic and we both really relate to the messages. They focus their messages to people who are both already believers and who are still seeking faith. If you keep going West on Nifong, a mile or two past Walgreens, it's on the corner of NIfong and Sinclair at a stop light. You can also look at their website. I"m not sure what it is, but you can google: woodcrest chapel and it should come up. Hope this helps!!

That is great that you are seeking a church...so let me give you a little info about Evangelical free of Columbia off of Silvey lane (right at the corner of Silvey and Worley, next to smithton park)
My husband and I are heavily involved in the children's ministry and we would love to have you come and visit. We meet Sunday mornings there is a traditional service at 8:00, but we do not offer childcare at this time because there as not been a need. If the need arises we are more than happy to accomidate. Then we have our Sunday School hour at 9:15 and Contemparary service at 10:45. Both the Sunday School and second service offer great classes for the kids. I would be happy to meet you at the door and show you around if you would like. I have 3 children, 7yr, 6yr, 4yr....two oldest are boys and younger is a girl. you are coming out of a Presbyterian church so it is possible that are beliefs are the same. so if you are interested feel free to contact me...I would also not mind meeting before a Sunday morning sometime....you are more than welcome to come over and visit and your daughter can play....
I would love to help you out....let me know. I also have friends that attend other churches so if E-Free is not for you I am still more than happy to help you get connected somewhere else.

Ths is my first time to respond on this site. I am so excited to see a mother who wants to bring up her child to know God.
I would recommend that you try worshipping with the Fairview Road Church of Christ. I find this to be a Church where you are not judged, where people realize that it is only through Christ's death on the cross that any can be saved and where Christians love and care for you. If you want to learn more about Fairview Road Church see their website: www.fairviewroad.org.

as mentioned several times before, woodcrest and the crossing are both great choices. i've volunteered for both children's ministries. the crossing is younger. both children's programs are phenomenal, pastors are wonderful, but the music is very different. one of the reasons that we went to the crossing for awhile was the more laid back, down to earth, inspirational, and quieter music. not that woodcrest's is not that, but it's a total personal choice. check out both.

I love my church Christian Fellowship so much. It is a non-denominational Christian church with a very welcoming and accepting family atmosphere. I really consider the church my family because the members are all so caring and loving that you really feel at home when you are there. We have great childcare services for all ages and have meetings on Sundays at 9:30 and smaller meetings on Friday nights at 7:30. Here is a link to their website http://www.christianfellowship.com/home.php.
I am always there and I have blond curly hair, so if you come, I would love to say hello to you.

I too go to the Missouri United Methodist Church, downtown. I have 4 kids and we are pretty active with the Children's Ministry. We attend the 8:50am service. It is wonderful because during the sermon there is other options for the children. They attend the first half of church and then children ages 1yr- kindergarten can attend serendipity choir and children 1st grade-5th grade attend Children's Church. The 11am service has a similar program for the kiddos. I'm just not sure exactly what.

I also teach Sunday school and am very happy with the "Live Big" program. The Methodist Church also employs "safe sanctuary" training on all teachers and nursery workers. They do background checks on everyone and you attend training every 2 years. We must have 2 adults teaching at all times. Really helps provide parents peace of mind.

You can check it out at www.moumc.org
Best of luck!

S.: I've not been there but I have a girlfriend that goes to The Crossing, their building is over on Nifong. I hear from both her and her 5 year old that they have a really good children's program. I go to Rocky Fork Fellowship in Hallsville, and we meet at the Hallsville Elementary School commons. Both of these churchs are non-denominational.

Woodcrest Chapel is considered a non-denominational church here in Columbia. It may be close to what you are looking for. I hear they have a wonderful children's church called Kidcrest.

My husband and I attend The Crossing, www.thecrossingchurch.com, check it out. They offer so many classes and have monthly events for everyone to partcipate in. It is awesome! Please check it out. Go on the website, you can probably get better directions if you do. The Crossing is on the South side of town by Kohls and Wal-Mart. I hope you enjoy the church as much as I do.
