Chronic Headache since birth of my daughter

My daughter was born on April 1st and a few weeks after I had her I started getting a horrible headache on the right side of my head. It is behind my right eye and goes all the way down to my neck. My ear feels full, and my jaw is also clicking. I went to the doctor this week and she prescribed anti seizure meds. She also ran my blood work and it came back fine. I had migraines before I got pregnant, however they were only around my period. Now I have a headache just about every day. My quality of life has been going downhill. I’m just wondering if I should get a second opinion or just take the meds. They have a ton of side effects. I waited to see the Dr until I weaned my daughter which was about 3 weeks ago. Could this be hormone related?

What can I do next?

I have to second the chiropractor. It can't hurt, and I think it is probably the best thing for you. All of the spine, nerves, and even the immune system are connected to whether or not your bones are aligned right. Medications and physical therapy will not do what a chiropractor can do in a few visits. You may need to go several times, but I have a feeling it is a combination of things moving too much from the relaxin, and everything being out of place from being pregnant and delivery. After I had my son, 2.5 years ago, I was in so much pain in my neck and mid back that I would lay and cry. My husband massaged it all the time and it didn't help at all. I finally broke down and went to the chiro, and he said that everything had gotten pushed out of place with that 10 lb baby inside and that the muscles had made sure to protect everything and keep them where they were so that they couldn't hurt worse or do more damage.

He could just move a few things the first couple of times I saw him because they were so stuck, but, after the 2nd week, I was doing so much better. I was better the same day, but not like Whoo-Hoo.

If you can't afford it, or if you insurance doesn't cover it, mine doesn't, then you should look for either one that works through a school, they do discounts, I pay $20 a visit here, or, one that will take payments.

Good luck! and, I would so try a chiropractor before I would take an antiseizure med unless you really know why the doc gave it to you. Maybe its a muscle relaxer? and its an anti-muscle seizure not a brain one? I hope you feel better soon!

Pnugget,

I had menstrual migraines since I started my periods when I was 10 years old. When we started trying to get pregnant with our daughter,I went off caffeine. The migraines were a combination of caffeine and hormones. With your ear feeling full and your jaw clicking,it sounds like a ear infection to me. I have had those all my life too. Did your doctor look at your ear? It also might be something related to your neck.
Good luck in find out what is causing the headaches.

Childbirth wreaks havoc on your body! You need to see an chiropractor right away. You need one that specializes in upper cervical manipulation. You're out of whack! The fact that it has gone on this long has just exacerbated everything. If you don't know one, you can go to ucspine.com and find one in your area. Your spine controls everything neurological...it has to be working properly.

Medications can make things worse as well. Chiropractic care is non invasive and you don't have to deal with side effects. It's one of the best things that has ever happened to me. We use chiropractic care as our first line of defense. We hardly ever get sick anymore and when we do, one visit and we're up and about quicker than ever.

If you have any questions, private message me. I'd love to help!

God bless,
M.

I would also speak to your dentist. Maybe try a mouth guard , while sleeping . A sports mouth guard that you boil & mold to your mouth, will work fine.

Sounds like stress related TMJ - I would check with a dentist or oral surgeon.

You don't say if the doctor looked at your ear for possible infection. Blood work alone might not turn everything up. Why did she prescribe an anti-seizure med? Have you actually had a seizure? Or does she know that this med is good for other conditions? I am not clear whether the doctor really listened to you and did all that was possible or if she just tossed a med at you and did bloodwork but little hands-on examination. Only you know how confident you are in the exam she did on you. You might need to get a referral to a specialist like someone who can do a detailed hormonal check on you. The fact that the ear on one side only feels full and your jaw is clicking (same side as the ear problem? I assume so...?) and the eye (on the same side??) is so painful, all would make me suspicious, if it were me. Those symptoms if all on the same side of your head are VERY localized and I would want a much closer inspection. You might need an ENT (ear, nose, throat) specialist for that as well. Did your doctor recommend any specialists? Any further tests or scans? Any follow-ups to see how the med she prescribed is doing? Did she ....really pay attention?

Be very assertive and do not let a cursory exam be the end of it. Yes, it could be hormonal but it could be something wrong with your ear/jaw/head.

Did you have an epidural? It could be from that.
