A ride on toy that she can also push. We like the winnie the pooh 5 in 1 or grow with me (I can't remember). It has a rocking base, or w/o it has wheels and you can attach a handle for you to push them or they can sit, push themselves or get off and push the toy.
Stacking blocks, nesting cups or boxes and first crayons are all good options as well.

For my daughter's first, we gave her books, a set of 4 toy cars, a doll, and a teddy bear. From other people, she got more books, bubbles, some little people, and some musical instruments. There was also a little clothing in there too, but it's not as exciting! :) Oh yeah, and a chunky puzzle.

Ideas for books: sandra boyton, dr suess, mo willems, little people lift-the-flap, and pretty much any other book you can think of! My daughter (now 2), LOVES the biscuit books and will "read" them to us regularly. I got a set of 5 or 6 for somewhere around $8 at Costco. She would have liked them at 1 as much as she does now.

This sorting cone was one of my son's favorite gifts:
http://www.amazon.com/Plan-Toys-531301-Cone-Sorting/dp/B0...

It's very pretty, made of wood, and is really interesting to play with. I think I have as much fun putting it together in different ways as my son does. It's great for encouraging finger dexterity as well as creativity. Honestly, it looks simple, but is truly amazing. Plus, no noises or batteries to drive you batty ;-) The whole line of Plan toys are very cool and worth looking at.

K.,

My kids, on their first birthday, got some Leapster learning toys. The ABC/123 drum, bongo drums that would convert to a rolling column, a creature piano/xylophone.

My kids are now 2 1/2 and 6 and still play with these toys.

Basically anything that lights up or makes noise. Kids are really getting into cause and effect at 1.

Piano: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2308723

Hope this helps,

My daughter turned 1 in October and was just learning to freely around Christmas of that year.
The best presents were: a baby doll! She was so excited she could barely contain herself. I knew though that she like dolls, because she played with them in daycare.

For her birthday her favorite was a wooden stacking toy.

I also got her a little push wagon around that time that she liked.

I would caution you, at this age less is more! She was definitely overstimulated by all the boxes to open, so we had to spread it out over a few days. Also of all the toys she has received only the doll and the stacker are still played with a year later...

The ride-on/push toys are a great idea, as are the large blocks. Big chunk peg puzzles, bath toys....

Baby Signs Products make a great gift for that age. Books, DVDs, chunky flash cards, BeeBo the bear; you can look at all of them at http://www.pjatr.com/t/4-21755-27711-20538

and be sure to add this free DVD Dictionary to help you learn the signs as well http://www.pntra.com/t/4-17287-27711-20538

I LOVE all the ideas before mine, but I will tell you my opinions! :) I would say anything that is stacking or allows them to put stuff in and out. My daughter, 16 months, LOVES the my first purse, comes with big lipstick, mirror, keys, etc and sings songs. Also my firt please and thank you tea pot, and the pig that you can put coins into and it counts and sings! she also LOVES her stroller that you push to learn how to walk and the little pink horse that you can ride on, all fisher price! They stroller and horse are kinda pricey and I got them used because they can grow out of them quick, but they look brand new and she still loves them! I will also say anything manipulative based; shapes, coins, blocks, etc, all GREAT for hand eye coordination and fine motor skills! :) Good Luck and God Bless

I would recommend lego blocks...the bigger style. They are easy for a child to hold and it's interesting to watch and see what they build out of them. Plus children don't tend to outgrow them for a long while so they last longer.

my little girl really loved her push-popper thing at that age. We got a hand-me-down one, but, i imagine that you can get one at a variety of toy stores.
It was not too long after 1 that she started to get into books, too.

Can I suggest getting her one of the rolling wood carts that have blocks in it, or one of the pretend grocery carts with big fake foods? They are great for learning to walk with, and will be fun for years. My daughter uses them still to drag her dolls around. Check out Target for the "Parents Around The Block Wagon."

Happy holidays!

Baby dolls, ride-ons, pull toys, manipulatives, cause and affect toys, push toys, puzzles with knobs and books, books, books!!!! There are a lot of good board books that are very good and popular stories that she will become familiar with when she's a bit older. If she already is familiar with the board book version, she is that much more interested later. I would stay away from anything electronic at this point (and I expect to get slammed about this) as there are so many other great things to learn at this age! Electronics will never go away, she has plenty of time for that.

Check out Boom Whackers! You can make music with them, and they are wonderfully versatile for making up all sorts of pretend and physical games. I got a set for my grandboy when he was about one, and three years later they are still a prominent feature in his weekly play.

Mega Blocks are great for 1 year olds. Also, my son and daughter both received the newborn cabbage patch kids for their First birthday and they both loved it!

Blocks, nest/stacking blocks, a ride on/walk behind toy.
Fisherprice has two things that my daughter loved - one was the my first purse and the other was this mailbox thing. Both adorable and fun for one year olds.

Cliche as it may seem, my daughter looooooooved the baby doll he grandma got her when she turned one (she's 7 now and she still loves dolls). Also, perennial favorites we've liked are those pop-up toys like this <http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=239037...; and another toy that has balls that can be hammered through their holes and roll down and out a chute like this or something like it <http://www.amazon.com/Plan-Toys-534800-Hammer-Balls/dp/B0....

I would suggest the toy that converts from sitting to one that she can push. Great way for her to practice her walking. My daughter and son both loved it at that age.

We got our daughter things she would be able to manipulate like blocks and toys with levers, knobs, and lights. She enjoys these toys a lot.
