Christmas Gift Ideas for a 13 Year Old Girl

My 13 year old have never asked for anything for Christmas or her birthday. Her statement have always been I get what I get and I don't get upset. And as wonderful as that sounds it makes it really hard to go shopping for her. Well she is now getting older and I am running out of ideas. She is an environmentally conscious young lady and have began making gift bags with old clothing because she said you can reuse it over and over again and the less paper that is used the better.

What can I do next?

What an amazing young lady! I like the idea of lessons of some sort. Also, there are plenty of green companies that you can buy gifts from - she may appreciate jewelry or other accessories that are made from recyclable items or that support a charity. Perhaps you can get tickets for you both to go somewhere together to do some charity work or go to an environmental conference for teens.

How about getting her some lessons; sewing, knitting, or ceramics? You could get her a paper maker, the kind that you use old bits of paper to make decorative paper. Google environmentally friendly arts and crafts and see what you find.

The big items on my 13 year old's list this year were a flip video camera or a ticket to a Broadway show. Remember that at this age, the gift doesn't need to be an item, per se - it can be a show or concert ticket, a day in the city at her choice of museums and landmarks, gift cards to local places like the movie theater, Blockbuster, ceramics place, ice rink, bowling alley, arcade or where ever she likes to go, so if she's not into "stuff" and clutter and materialism, you can give her a good time instead.
Good luck!

Hi J.,

I have a 13 year old daughter too. So I asked her to respond. Here's her response....

For a enviromentally consience 13 year old, I would suggest som nice CD's. I am also enviromentally consience and here are some bands that are trying to protect the enviroment: Green Day, Good Charlotte, Plain White T's, Linkin Park, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Metro Station, Paramore and Jonas Brothers. About 98% of these bands are doing all that is in thier power to save the planet. I would also suggest some good books. My favorites are the books in the Twilight series. The books are about vampires, and they are a very good read. When I read the frist 2 pages of Twilight, the first book, I became addicted. Once you start, you won't stop until you finish. When she finishes, she will probably beg you to take her to see the movie, which is very gooed. Well, that is all I can think of.

your daughter sounds so terriffic. i hope my girl will become as selfless and peaceful. what an inspiration!

i bet she would most enjoy being close to you! what if the gift was a special trip for the two of you, like a day in the city going to a nice all natural resturaunt and going to a movie of her choice, something like that, maybe even with some shopping included. perhaps there are some stores in your area that sell local crafts or beads and the two of you could spend some time choosing and buying the things to make an art project together.

if you really have money to spend you could go somewhere overnight together, like to another city; Washington DC is not too far, it's a great city for the arts. you could drive or take amtrak there, stay one night in a hotel, go to a museum and a nice lunch out and go home that night.

also if you wanted to find her some cool, enviornmentally concious T-shirts you can just google that and all kinds of amazing websites will come up.

but i also think a special watch can be a great gift for a growing up young lady. a really high quality one that she can wear all through her teenage years and hang onto as a keepsake forever, from you, is mature and special. you can even get it inscribed with a message of love on the back.

have a great holiday
J.

It sounds like you have a WONDERFUL young lady on your hands! My girls are turning 11 and are starting to be interested in those teenage things. Does she like to play games? Does she have a nintendo DS? Her own cell phone? (my girls think this is a sign of maturity). Is she intersted in her appearance? How about a Claire's gift card or Aeropostal? Those seem to be teenage appropriate stores. If you want to eliminate waste and be more environmentally friendly try giving her priveledges. Does she use a computer? Allow her to have an IM or a facebook page (if you create your own facebook you can monitor her page as well). Good Luck She sounds like very responsible child. J.

Hi J.
Your daughter sounds wonderful and a lot more selfless than many 13 year old girls. I have a 13 yr old too. She and her friends basically all want the same items for Christmas. The latest in touch screen cell phones, new camera, ipod, professional hair straightener and new style of ugg boots. Yoga pants seem to be very popular as well. She also wants a lap top to replace her regular computer, but she won't be getting one this year. I think clothes, makeup and fun slippers are always a safe bet too. My daughter loves anything with a peace sign on it. Good luck!

She sounds like a delight. I wonder if she would like a gift in her honor, instead of in her stocking - there are numerous charities that will let you save a panda, save a forest, save a whale, etc. and do so in your daughter's name.

She sounds like a really cool, socially conscious young lady. Did you ever think about giving money to a charity she would support in her name? It's a cool, socially conscious way to celebrate the season.

Maybe since she is into decorating gift bags now, taking here to Michael's arts & crafts store might be a good idea. You would be showing her that what she sees at important is important to you as well. In addition, she will be impressed that you have taken on interest in her new "project". Good Luck and Happy Holidays!

Does she read or take an inerest in movies? I got my daughter a book in the series that the movie Twighlight came from and I also got her a game for the tv that you can dance along with the music and learn HS musical dances. She is a bot immmature for her age but the books are all the rage for the teens right now.
You could get a big bucket of popcorn from a vido store and put candy/ videos/ gift cards to the store or the movie theatre... If she's girlie like mine you can get her a manicure pedicure gift cert. ... Makeover gift certificate at a salon - could even be for her and a friend... something to do with music ... a magazine with a gift susscription writen on it...I'll try to think of more.. i see the response about the watch which made me think of two other things... her best friend isgetting a watch from us from Cracker Barrell believe it or not. thy were by the register - you buy the face and then you buy the ands serperately. They are gorgeous. Go take a look - like beaded bracelets with stones and the watch has irridescent stones behind the dial... I also took my daughter and her best friend to The Lodge at great escape for their 13th b-days - they are close together - and they absolutely loved it.

How about:

-gift card to a store she likes (Macy's, JCrew, etc.)
-membership to Netflix
-50 songs from ITunes (if she has an Ipod)
-Ipod (if she doesn't have one)
-gift card to Borders or Barnes and Noble

Choice is a huge part of being a teenager, which is why I think gift cards are so appropriate!

Another fun idea- concert tickets for a group that you know she likes. Buy 3 or 4, so she can bring a friend (or two) and you can chaperone.

Hi J.,

I agree with the other moms; what a wonderful young lady you have! Sounds like you've done a terrific job raising her.

I really like Kate's suggestion -- tickets to an environmental conference for teens. That'll help to support and reinforce her ideals, and show her that you value them.

How about a magazine subscription to a environmental magazine geared for teens? Clothes made from recycled cloth? A book of crafts or ideas on how to make other things by recycling? If she has an MP3 player- then an ITUNES gift certificate, or similar.... Movie tickets, bowling alley gift cert..... GOOD LUCK

Our daughters seem so much alike! My 13 year old daughter absolutely loves recycled products - like candy wrapper bags and bracelets. Also she likes cute tote bags, earrings, etc. She likes to get clothes, but I never know what to get her, so I ask her to make me a wish list a couple weeks before Christmas or her birthday.

How about art supplies - my daughter loves her sewing kit. She likes to make purses out of old jeans. She also likes watercolors. Buy her a recycled sketchbook!
