I am having my son Christened on 6/15/08 and will be having a bbq party at the house afterwards and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what to put on the cake or side dishes to serve. Also, should there be anything special that should be done at the party?

What can I do next?

Costco has great cakes and they are only 15 bucks, for like a half of a sheet cake. The are huge and good. They have a cross one

Our cake had "God Bless John" with a cross on it. Mostly white frosting with blue touches.
For side dishes, I'd serve a coleslaw, baked beans, chips, a pasta salad, veggie tray with dip.

Make sure that you buy a corsage and boutinniere for the godmother and godfather, so that their role in your child's life is acknowledged.

Other than that, we had asked everyone to bring a dish or dessert in lieu of gifts, and that made it easier for us since we just had to provide the main dish/meat.

I agree with the previous poster about acknowledging the godparents in a special way. The corsages are a nice way or maybe a framed photo with the godparent and the baby. For the cake, I would go to Costco, Sam's, or Food 4 Less. They all make great cakes and really reasonable. You can get a whole sheet for under $30 and pick out the flavor, frosting, fillings, etc...I would probably just go with the traditional cross or dove and congratulations. For sides, since it is a bbq, then the typical potato salad, pasta salads...etc would be good. I also like to put out fresh fruit and/or veggie platters in the summer for non-meat options and auderves (<---sp?)Have fun! Make sure you have water, soda, and/or beer if this suits your guests.

We didn't have a cake , we just had lots of different desserts. Since we have such a big family we also had a barbque, which worked out really well. We had family bring dishes so we had lots of food. For desserts we had cupcakes, brownies, pie and cookies.

We got our cake from Swiss Maid Bakery in Woodstock, the best cake around in my opinion. It was a cross cake and we put Jacob, Child of God on it. We served chicken, salad, fruit salad, beef sandwiches and baked beans. The basic picnic type foods. Our parents thankfully offered to bring a lot of the food so that was a huge help for us b/c then we just needed to worry about cleaning the house and getting our son ready. Hopefully they do the same for our daughters Christening in July :-)

We're planning one in July as well. I always try to be unique and have great parties...but with little ones it can be difficult! To save on anxiety, this time I plan to order BBQ ribs from Gale Street, a bit pricey, but DELICIOUS! They have some sides too. There's also a mexican restaurant, Taco Burrito King, that caters (chicken and steak burritos with all the fixings). For sides, think of things that can be out in the heat and not get too yucky, like Costo's or Sam's big boxes of appetizers you warm up. Put dips and salads in bowls on top of bowls of ice, try little pbjs if lots of kids are coming,(use cookie cutters on flat bread or pizza dough to make them cuter). Ambrosia salad (fruit salad with marshmallows)is great. Jewel makes scrumptious cakes, they can scan his picture onto it too.
The most special thing you can do is say a heartfelt prayer before the meal with everyone. Something special for the 2 yr old would be nice too since they get jealous so easy! (Maybe a toddler bible or bible song CD) Oh, and ask for donations to a college fund for gifts (open a Bright Start or Collegbound Fund or other for people to add to).
God Bless and have fun!

I put on my sons cake, God Bless Alexander with a cross. As far as sides you could serve salad, which can be purchased already made. Potato or pasta salad is also a good side with BBQ foods.

I highly recommend sams for the cake. I think we just put God bless Michael on a cross cake. I highly recommend to keep the party simple.

Keep it simple and enjoy the day. It goes by so fast. We just had our son baptized and the cake read "God Bless Matthew". It could also read "God Bless Matthew Sean on his Baptism".
Good side dishes are vegetables, fruit salad, tossed salad, chips. If there are young kids make sure to have plenty of things for them (toys, games, food). Have fun.

The cake can say "God Bless (baby)" or such- the bakery may even have suggestions. What are you serving at the bbq? Sides can include anything- potato salad, cole slaw, various salads, .... just make it EASY on yourself! Nothing special needs to be done at the party, but an idea: at my son's christening, I gave out little framed photos of him to guests (since they are all close family and friends at these parties generally).... depending on how many people you have, you can even get inexpensive frames at party stores.

When I had my daughters, I got a picture cake from Jewel with a cute picture of her and just had them write God Bless and her name. It turned out really cute.

We found cute decorative plates and napkins with crosses on them. On the cake was a cross and it said God Bless (son's name). Enjoy his special day!
