anyone know of any remedies that are safe or any RX drugs I can ask about for cholic. Sadly my son seems to have developed it at only 10 days old. It's young to have it, i know, but that's what the dr. said it seems to be. I know my mom told me she used some RX drug they gave her back when I was little, but I dunno if there's anything out NOW that is used for it...anyone know? cause i need some sleep and I'm a first time mom and it breaks my heart to see my son in pain like that :(

What can I do next?

You may want to be in touch with a chiropractor. I know my son had the same problem and it wound up being related to his digestive tract, which the chiro was able to adjust him and solve the problem. Dr. Wendy Baxter in Arlington is great with kids and owns Baxter Family Chiropractic. We have been going to the chiropractor since my son was 7 days old, and he has been in amazing health, and colic free:)

Well when my daughter was going through the same thing, and her other grandma said her dr prescribed something when her kids were little...BUT whatever that drug was (i dont remember its name) it was later found to cause terrible side effects and is no longer being prescribed. As far as home remedies..Gripe Water is a life saver!!! It is all natural and very safe. You can get it at many stores..Sprouts in particular...and I think I might have seen it in Albertsons. I swear by it!! Good Luck and hang in there, just remember this to shall pass.

Catylin,

I have good news for you. Most colic is caused by the 4th trimester needs to have help in calming and that reflex needs to be triggered. Dr Karp teaches it and has won awards for his studies on the cause of colic, I am certified by his foundation to teach it as well. I can either do a private consultation, a group class or at least get his dvd and it really works.

You begin with a tight swaddle every time and then add a progression of steps, side, shushing, swinging and sucking to the swaddle. My Grandson, very high needs, would respond in under 5 minutes every time and sleep for at least 2-3 hours. \

Please feel free to call me to teach these techniques to you if you need help. I would be happy to.

I would seriously recommend that you go to the library and pick up a book called "Colic Solved" by Dr. Vartabedian. I read it after having a very fussy, very unhappy baby for six months and I wish I had found it sooner. He believes that there's "no such thing as Colic" and that babies cry for a reason - primarily acid reflux and/or milk protein allergy (my son had both) and he tells you how to determine if either applies to your child and what you can do about it. It would be worth reading just to know if there's anything you can do. We didn't solve all my son's issues, but we definitely found some things/medicines to make it better. He's outgrowing it now at 10 months, and is happier all the time, but it's been a struggle and if there's anyway you can avoid it, I hope you can.

I don't know if he's right - that's just what he says and I felt like it fit my child. I also agree that gripe water is good stuff. We used it all the time with my first child. I hope you can find something that helps. The more info you can get, the better!

I had a honeymoon baby that resulted in a colic baby myself! It was true h#ll and I totally feel for you! I wore my baby and nursed her all the time. I didn't look into any drugs because I was worried about her system. I did cut out dairy, corn and pineapple and she was a little better. If I were you, I would keep track of what I ate and then note how he reacts a few hours later. Most the time, it is aproblem with the food you are eating (he gets it via breastmilk). The biggest culprits are dairy, wheat, broccooli, garlic and corn. Try cutting one of these items out for a few days (it takes up to three days for food to leave your system) and then see how he is. You might also need to get him tested for reflux--very painful for babies. Also, look into baby wearing so you can get stuff done and feel human!
Big hugs--colic almost never goes past six months!!

Gripe water is great and you can't give him too much. Something else to check out is "Happiest baby on the block" it's a great book/dvd to help with colicy babies especially newborns. It talks about the 10th month of pregnancy being out of the womb and how to help him adjust to life outside mommy.

Congrats!

My first baby was colicky too. And I tried everything!!! I agree that the OTC remedies are worthless. I was breast feeding and cut everything from my diet but chicken and apples. Yet she still cried incessantly. Swaddling helped as did the fan and the vacuum (white noise can be very soothing). She would sleep while riding in the car and continue to sleep in her car seat for an hour or so once the car stopped. I agree with Kay's assessment of the problem being "4th trimester" issues because with my daughter, the colic symptoms stopped exactly at 12 weeks as if someone had turned off a faucet of running water. The best you can do is find something that works to soothe you son and when he sleeps (no matter how briefly), you sleep. If you have the support, get out of the house for an hour or two to escape the crying. My husband and I would just take turns sleeping a few hours at a time. I know it feels really bad right now but it will end and then you won't believe the change in your baby's disposition.

C.,

My dd cried from 4 pm until 4 am--for 4 months straight. It is the babies system getting used to the stimuli of the outside world--some babies are more sensitive. I would not recommend any of the OTC remedies as I have heard bad things---what finally worked was Nutramigen formula--very expensive but she stopped being colicky within days of switching to this formula. My neighbor used to run the bathroom fan/vacuum cleaner--not sure why it helps but./..just a thought--be patient and it will end! I promise.

Hi C.!
I know how hard colic can be too! My daughter was a premie and had very bad colic. I thought I was going to go crazy! We found out about something called Gripe Water. They sell it at Kid to Kid in Bedford and some other small drug stores. It really worked for us. I have known other people who used it and had great luck with it too. I also agree with the others, do the swaddling. We would swaddle then put our daughter in a swing. That was the only thing that kept us sane!
Good luck!
If you need any help or just someone to talk to send me a private message and I'll give you my phone number!
