Just wondering if anyone has a suggestion for an eye doctor for kids in the Lockport/Orland/New Lenox area. We have vsp insurance if that matters to anyone answering. Our younger daughter needs the school eye exam and since she is still rotating and switching letters I'd like a doctor that is really familiar with kids eye conditions. Thanks for the help!!!
Just thought I would chime in on how great Dr. French is in Orland. My daughter is 2 1/2 and is very comfortable with her. We used to go to UIC in Chicago and Allyssa hated it. Good luck to you.
We LOVE!!!! Dr. French in Orland with Children and Family Eyecare. She specializes in children. She is really up to date on new technology/advances in the eyecare field and has been published in some professional journals also. She accepts VSP insurance - I have that too. They take care of all of the billing for insurance. She is wonderful with the kids and my kids love her. She also offers vision therapy, which my son did because he couldn't read well and was switching letters. After 12 weeks of therapy, his grades soared, he was playing sports better and had a lot more confidence in himself.
I know 4 other families in my neighborhood that use her too.

Hi A.! My husband and I have an optometric practice in Joliet and we are full scope (we see newborn through to low vision geriatric). We welcome new patients and accept assignment on VSP. Just a heads up that the new "law" requiring an optometry exam for entering kindergarteners is not actually a restrictive law, like the immunizations are. Meaning, if your child does not get all her immunizations by Sept 1 then she'll be excluded, but if you don't get her the eye exam she cannot be sent home. They're just trying it because there is such a lag in the time between entering kindergarten in August and the time that every child in the state can be screened by the vision screeners from the health departments or the district. I got this information straight from our district's health coordinator...our kindergarten enrollment people told me that it was mandatory and the health coordinator said it is not.
We will also likely be getting an exam for our kindy-entering daughter, and we are blessed to have insurance that will pay for the visit are you are. Most families are not that lucky and the eye exam is about $80. That's a lot of money.
Also, be aware that there are 2 kinds of eye doctors. One is an opthamologist, who treats diseases of the eye and eye conditions. The opthamologist is a MD who specializes in eyes. The other is an optometrist, who prescribes glasses and can treats some eye conditions. The optometrist is an OD and is more limited in his practice. An opthamologist's visit will cost you more, and from my experience (as a glasses wearer for 31 years; having seen both docs) the optometrists are FAR more accurate in their determination of what prescription you need for glasses. In fact, having just seen an opthamologist for an eye condition myself, the first person I saw in the practice that day was an optometrist who checked my prescription, then the opthamologist came in.

Dr. Kisla in New Lenox at Advanced Eye Care. He is an opthamologist which has more education than an optometrist. Because he is a real doctor our insurance pays for everything except our copay. But our insurance doesn't pay for glasses either. So it is a bonus, he has more education and the insurance pays for most of it cuz he's a surgeon. He has 3 young kids and so he's good with kids and he also takes time with each patient no matter what so sometimes you might need to wait a while but I appreciate that when he sees us he will take the time we need and just not run us through. 3 of my kids have a rare eye issue and Dr. Kisla watches them closely. The office staff there is great too.
I don't know if this pertains to you but I'll try to make a long story short....My 5 yr. old passed his school eye exam with his ped., eye dr. and school nurse. But his teacher and school occupational therapist (OT) kept saying his tracking was off among a few other things. The OT suggested I take him to a...I can't remember exactly what his title is, but he's a pediartic eye dr that looks deeper into the muscle's of eye, anyway it turns out that he has convergence,ie.clumsy eye muscle's, which has caused him a TON of problems(I was relieved to find out it was his eye's rather than him having mental issues with school and learning)so now he has a low prescrition glasses and we have to go once a week for therapy and do thereapy at home 3 times a week. If this sounds like any kind of a possibility for you, the Dr. and office is great, they are awesome with my son as well as with explaining everything to me, but the only downfall is they are in Arlington Heights which is a little ride, but well worth it. If you are interested and think this may pertain to you I can give the info. Good luck and what ever you do make sure you take care of it while she is young it will be much easier on her in the long run. I hope this helps.
We take our daughter to the Eye Specialist Center in Orland Park. We see Dr. Ticho. He's wonderful and has helped our daughter tremendously. They specialize in helping children. The number there is ###-###-####. Good luck to you.
My children have been seeing Dr. Davis at her New Lenox office for years. She is a pediatric opthemaligist (sp sorry) Our medical insurance pays for our visits, so not sure about VSP. She is in the Silver Cross building on Rt. 30. My son has DS and Autism and she has been great dealing with him and all the eye issues that come along with his diagnosis. Good Luck
We go to Dr. Mary Lou French - Children's and Family Eye Care at 143rd and 108th Avenue in Orland Park. She's great! Our children have not had any vision problems to date, but since my husband and I both wear glasses, we figure it's only a matter of time for the kids, and we want to catch any problems early. My husband has gone to Dr. French for 25+ years, and I for about 10 years. Her website is www.childrenseyes.com. Her staff is great with the kids, very professional and knowledgeable.
