I am going to get rid of all of our plastic plates, and cups with all the disney, dora, etc decorations. I havent found any glass or ceramic/ porcelain place settings for my girls locally. Do you know of any websites I could find plates, bowls, and cups that are not plastic?

THANKS!

*I am trying to limit plastic use in our home.
**I have two sets of dishes, one that belonged to my great-grandmother that I dont want to chance being broken on accident- We use these everyday for my husband and I-they are a casual set. Our other set is our wedding set that is no longer being made, so again not wanting to risk having it broken for sentimental reasons! If I am buying a few dishes for the girls, I would like to find something fun for them!

What can I do next?

What is wrong with the dishes that you eat off of? If it's that the dinner plate is too big, I just use the salad plate for my daughter.

I'm assuming you are worried abut the BPA and melamine which are both proven toxic?? I removed all that about 3 years ago. For my everyday dishes for my kids I use a cheap set of glass corelle dishes. They are extremely tough to break and you can't scratch them with a knife like the plastic wear. However, go here, she has a lot of places listed on where you can find dishes free of toxins that may interest you http://naturemoms.com/blog/2008/02/21/bpa-free-feeding-ge...

If you google ceramic dishes for children you'll get quite a varitey of things available. Personally I always used the salad plates from my own set of dishes. Anything needing a bowl I used coffee cups. Drinks were served in paper cups or regular glasses depending on the age (although since I was right there broken glass wasn't really much of a problem).

You can get an inexpensive set of Corelle and let them pick out the pattern. Corelle is very durable, break resistant glass that would be good for them in case they drop something.

Use your gr-grandmother's set for the girls! Tell them who she was and what she did every time you use them. Make her present in their life. What a gift for them to know their family history this way.

I use my grandmother's dishes every day, and I started when my kids were 4 and 6. That is also when I started tell them stories about their family history. By the time they were teens they knew so much family and local history, they would say, "yeah, yeah, mom, we know...." funny kids.

I STILL use plastic, LOL! I bought supercute picnicware (plain colored 'grown up' stuff) from Target and it's lasted for... 7 years? 8 years? I'd stick with plastic a while longer... I don't plan on letting my kids use 'real plates' until I know I'M old enough not to accidentally break something, LOL!!

We use pyrex small custard cups everyday. We also have some slightly larger ones called storage 2 cup bowls with lids that we use for cereal now that the kids are a little older. For snacks and soup, the custard cups are perfect. I found small juice glasses that match our set that we use for their everyday glasses now. The perfect size for their small hands. Then for plates, they use the small plates that came with our everyday plate set. No need for kiddie designs and expensive sets. As the kids get older you'll have to replace again.

Kate Spade makes a cute set called Pippen Park - we have it for my son. To be honest however, he eats from the same dishes we do now (we use the salad plate instead of the dinner plate).

Check Value Village or Goodwill.... Also, IKEA has some stainless steel bathroom cups (that we use when outside) and bowls for decent prices. The Stainless steel thermos character water "bottles" are great too! Good luck!

I go to Ikea for that. they have cheap dishes and bowls $1.00 to $2.00 per if you are buying ala carte, or about 20 for a whole set with 4 place settings. They are ceramic and can break pretty easily. My hubby and I have used ares for over a year and been really happy about it. It's helped teach my kids to be gently with dishes. my kids are 3.5 and 2 years old. you could also buy the cheap camping plates and bowls down side to that is food cools quickly and can't go in the microwave.

Good luck

I went to the resturant supply store and bought a few tempured glass salad plates and bowls. They are very sturdy and my kids like them better than our regular dishes because they aren't as heavy.

I bought a set of little glasses at Ikea for $3, and our 3.5 yr son uses salad plates for his meal and/or little pyrex custard-sized bowls (for cereal, pasta, salad). Everything's been dropped and we've been lucky so far - nothing broken.
