I have actually never bought my kid a toy that takes batteries, but I would like to get a camera for my daughter for her 4th birthday. Have you bought one that you can recommend.....or do you have one that you would not recommend? I don't even know where to begin. Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

my son received a fisher price camera a couple years ago when he turned 2 :P he LOVES it, it is VERY durable, and actually gets interesting pictures. i recommend this one because it seems very hard to break; it is sortof "rubber" on the outside so if dropped, it has something to absorb the impact. anyway, thats what i recommend. :P

After a lot of research, we bought our 2 oldest kids (then 3 and 5) each a Vtech KidiZoom digital camera 2 Christmases ago based on the many favorable reviews, despite some negative reviews. In case you are considering this camera, just know that it is more of a toy than a quality camera. I don't mean that as a criticism though - the camera was perfect for their ages at the time (just the age of your daughter now!), and they still greatly enjoy playing with them. They have a lot of fun features for kids, including short video capability (again though, not good quality), games, changeable face plates, and screen editing options to add funny visual effects to a photo. The cameras do seem to go through batteries pretty fast though, and since the picture quality is not good, so we are considering getting a "real" digital camera for Christmas for our now-7-year-old.

We have the fisher price kid tough camera... very cute and extremely durable. Also easy to use. BUT it takes terrible pictures. They are all grainy. My 4 yr old loves it! Loves it! And she thinks the pictures she takes are fantastic... so funny. Probably not much help huh?

We bought our son a Nikon CoolPix camera 5 years ago. Check out amazon's black friday sales for electronics. We paid apx $50 for a 200-250 camera, and it's still going great.

I completely agree about the toy cameras. We bought one for our niece (don't remember the brand but it came from Bed Bath and Beyond). Our daughter and another niece got the Fisher Price one from my parents. They may be indestructible but they are bulky, eat batteries, take poor quality pictures, cannot take an "action" shot of any kind, etc. If I had it to do over again I would have gotten cheap real cameras. Even our 14 month old has been using my camera with supervision and has gotten some good shots.

I agree with the others - don't buy them. I bought one for my oldest - and they enjoy playing with it, but the pictures are terrible! They do very well with my camera.

I would buy them a cheap regular camera!

I'm with Riley! Skip the "cheap" toy cameras that don't really take good pictures. We've been there and done that only to have grainy, far away shots! Go with an inexpensive real camera. Your daughter is 4 and is probably somewhat responsible. We used to give our, then 4 year old daughter our real point-and-shoot camera for 15 minutes at a time and she ended up taking some really fun pictures! She also enjoyed watching us download them on the computer! We're Canon fans . . .
