Children Given an EXTRA Hep a Vaccine

I just found out that my daughter was given an extra Hep A vaccine by the request of her former ped. I was laid off and lost my insurace with them so my kids are now on healthy fam and was assigned to another dr. I asked their former dr. to let me know what they needed to complete their school enrollment forms and she wrote down that my daughter needed a Hep A vac. and I passed that onto the new dr. She got the vac and when I asked the nurse to stamp their immunization cards, I found that she received an extra hep a. I was really angry and went to the former dr. office and told them what happened and they apoligized. I had also requested to have their immun. cards be updated from them and then found out that my son had ALSO been given an extra hep A vac. from them in the past. AHH! My daughter is 4 & son is 5. I'm not quite sure how to respond to this situation. Any advice would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

It's not really a big deal. I mean, it's not dangerous or anything (nor does it make her any more immune).

And you're not at that doctors office anymore, so I wouldn't worry about that. Mistakes happen, even to doctors.

My son got an expired dose of one vax so had to be re-vaccinated (though I don't remember what at the moment).

However, I think maybe now YOU should be proactive of your children's health. YOU should have a record of when and why your children have seen the doctor.

The doctors office sees hundreds of kids. So, you need to be extra proactive about your two. I always check the vials of vaccines to make sure it's the right one, and it's not expired.

I understand your frustration completely! I actually don't bother to vaccinate my kids, a lot think it's crazy but i have good resources. Look up Dr. Sherry Tennpenny on the internet, she's on facebook as well. She gives statistics and info about all children's vaccines, and it really opens you up. My children have never been healthier and it's scary knowing all of the mistakes that people in the medical field are capable of making! Good luck, i'm sure you'll make the right choice :)

Second EVERYTHING that Emily E. said.

My daughter's peditrican has a card for me that they write on every time my daughter gets a shot as well as her height/weight. This is for my own personal recordes as well as the doctor's office is giving me a great tool to be proactive in my daughter's health. I am in the room when the shoots are given, I see the nurse or doc right on my card and type it into their laptop and so in the future if a question comes up or I am un sure about what she has gotten I can just look at the card I have. If your child(ren)'s doctor's office does not do it, ask if they will or just do it yourself.

The only thing double tapping a vax will do is to act as a booster. I know that I was completely up to date on all my vax's... but when I enlisted I forgot my vaccine card. So when I went through the vaccine line at at bootcamp in addition to the extra vaccines that aren't on the regular schedule (tropical and 3rd world illnesses) that we all got, I (and many others) got all of the standard vaccinations added on as well. I think it was something like 12 in one arm and 14 in the other (if I'm remembering correctly, those with cards only got one arm done). In bootcamp they use the sprayguns (that inject dermally via water pressure, stand very still or they'll slice your arm, but no needles). Psssstzap. Psssstzap. Done.

An extra vaccine will not create extra immunity, BUT sometimes the original vaccination doesn't "take" for various reasons (your own immune system will sometimes copy a "blue print" badly, or store it incorrectly, etc)... so the ONLY thing an extra vaccination will do is to make sure that your body has the antibody blueprint on file.

Medical professionals, for just that reason, would always rather double a vaccine than miss one.

I would feel angry and upset myself this is medication it is to prevent dieseases yes but given an extra shot their records shoulfd of been as accurate as 100%.Mistakes happen I would ask the DR. straight forward what is the risks to my children receiving an extra dosage of this vaccine. All our records are now computerized so no matter where we go they can pull up their names and see their shot records as well as in the charts and my copy from the office.Next time ask questions and make sure you see the chart for yourself don't you have to sign off on vaccines where you live?before they are administered?

Have you talked to the new doctor about the implications of this? It sounds like they are healthy and that it hasn't been bad for them. Are you thinking of suing or something? I'm not sure that there is really much you can do. It may be something where you just need to vent, maybe contact the medical board to complain, and then let it go.

OMG, I would be livid but then again, we no longer vax our kids. I second Dr. Tenpenny. Do your research. Vaccines aren't all the end all be all. Research statistics on diseases and you will find out that most diseases began to dramatically decrease in occurrence as handwashing, better nutrition and general cleanliness became common, not after vaccines were created. Vaccines came later and are a way for Drs. to make ALOT of money. Find out how much of your ped's profits come from vaccines. Again, do your research before you vaccinate your kids!

Hmm...I guess I can understand why your feel angry. But, the truth is that it is our responsibility to keep track of our immunizations. There is not set record keeping and it is very easy to misplace records. Hep A was on back-order for a long time (maybe somehow they assumed your children didn't receive it). The best way to respond is to keep all childrens vaccinations together and take them with you to the office if you know your child is due for a shot, so that this doesn't happen again.
PS. If for some reason your records were lost and you had no proof they had the shots....they would end up receiving the shots again.

Why do you need to respond? Can they undo the vax? Don't respond, what in the world would you say and why? Take your kids to the pool or run through the sprinkler and enjoy the last few days of summer.
