Maybe i should have asked this first. How do you know your child is getting relief ect from a chiropractor??? My DD toe walks on her left side, she iwill have surgery when she is older. In the mean time we are encouraged to try what ever we think might help. I've taken her 3 times to a chiropractor that deals with children. DD hates drs, nurses etc wasn't very cooperative the first time, I've brided her with icecream the last 2 times and she has been better. I am very sympathetic to her fear but I also want to do what i can to help her, so don't think I don't have her best interest at heart. She also hates her Sunday school teacher, the mailman, and clerks at the grocery store. I digress.
I ask her each time if she feels better after she goes, does anything hurt, does her leg feel better etc. She always says she feels good, I ask her if she likes the dr NO. does she want to go back NO. I"m trying to really watch her movements and behavior but I really can't tell if anything has changed.
So for you that have taken your children, have they been old enough and able to verbalize that they feel better or do you notice something or is it just preventaive?? thanks

The only time I have EVER had trouble with my back is when I went to a Chiropractor. I went in there for a sore shoulder and they talked me into adjusting. After that my back would go out to where I couldn't move. They tried to tell me that was supposed to happen. Yeah right. I would not have a child adjusted ...there is way too much that could go wrong.

not reading the other posts, this topic can get nasty, so I'll just say my piece.

My 10 year old goes, he says he feels better, but then nothing has ever really been wrong with him.

My 8 year old goes, she's in gymnastics and just made preteam and it's HARD on her body. She messed up her shoulder, couldn't move it, spent hours in the Er only to be told it was fine. Chiro fixed her right up and she had full range of motion after two visits.

My 8 month old goes, he was this tiny little tense ball for a good 6 weeks after he was born. I had a different baby after the first visit, he unclenched and was happier and slept better, cried less.

I can't say I always feel better after going, sometimes it hurts. But my one hip goes out all the time, and I have gotten so I can tell. I start to trip over that foot when I walk. The tripping stops after she puts everything back into place.

So for us there are issues at times but mostly it's preventative and we all like it. I don't always see a difference but when there is a problem I normally do. Some things do take time though, it took two visits for my DD's shoulder to go back right and stay put so she could move it without pain. If your daughter is going to need surgery chances are it may take awhile before you see obvious results.

I started seeing a chiropractor a few weeks ago and she said that I needed to give it a few weeks. There are two of them in the office and one I feel good about the other HURT me badly and I pray she doesn't show up in the room. The other one told me to tell her that she is using way too much pressure. I had mixed feelings about chiropractors until I met my daughter's close friend's mother who happens to be one. She changed my opinion. But I think there are really good ones and really not good ones also, so I would get recommendations. You don't say how old your daughter is. My daughter hated doctors, screamed if we even drove by the office, hated hair stylists, shoe fitters, etc, until she was about 4. My son dislikes doctors also and he is 5. I wouldn't let that reaction deter you if it is helping her.

When my daughter was 4, she saw me getting worked on by a chiropractor and asked to have it done too... I agreed and she loved it.

Maybe let your daughter see YOU getting adjusted may help?

My four year old has been going since he was born. Now he ranks going to the chiro up with going to Chucky E. Cheese! In fact we have appointments tomorrow morning and he's excited to "go on the table for a ride."

Does she like the dentist? Probably not. Does she like chores? Probably not. Sometimes when you're not in physical pain you can't tell the difference when you see a chiropractor, or a dentist for that matter! We all falsely believe that when all looks good on the outside that all IS good.

I and my kids have been adjusted our whole lives, I believe it's super important for healthy development and a good immune system, as the spinal cord houses the nervous system and fibrils all bodily function.

It can hurt the first few times, as you undo the pain cycle, it's called retracing. But then again, the dentist hurts sometimes, and so does working out the first few times. Right?

Keep her going, you'll see a difference in her gait, as well as frequency and length of illness in the future. My kids and others I know who get adjusted are the healthiest ones I know! I agree with both of you being adjusted, maybe that will make it cooler or more normal to her. Some kids bring a doll or stuffed animal to get adjusted too, and my Chiro does one copayment for both a parent and child on the same day.

My son has always enjoyed the chiropractor because at least he didn't need shots there.

I'm just curious though, did or does your daughter use one of those walkers or saucer chairs? The only children I have seen that toe walk were ones that were allowed to use those. Why don't they warn parents about that side effect of using them? Luckily, if you stop using them and use stretching techniques, you can sometimes have them walk flat footed again without surgery.

Good luck.

I've taken all 5 of mine but not regularly. If she doesn't want to go back, you might want to wait until she's older.
