We were just told that my 10 month old daughter has severe milk, egg, and tree fruit allergies. I'm seeking other mothers that have dealt with this. Suggestions for diet? Where do you shop? Cookbooks? When did you switch from nursing to soy milk? Any other tips or helpful hints??? Thanks!

I would stay very very very far away from soy milk. If you want the research esp. if she is allergic to nuts, I can get it to you. But honestly, its very easy. It just requires discipline, effort, and real commitment to her health. If you are ready for all those things then go for it and you will succeed! Shop at places like Wild Oats, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Jewel has a section for health food, and many other places as well. The key is to read labels VERY carefully. You cannot purchase foods without reading thoroughly - that is critical. I will tell you tree fruit allergies and milk can be serious if you do not heed to a strict diet without them so just be careful. My husband is allergic to wheat and spelt and we see someone who works with him on this and other health things. He is a homeopathic MD and he has helped him soooooooooooo much! If you want the name I'd be happy to share it with you. Good luck!

My son (now 16mo)is allergic to Milk. I breasfead him until he was 12 months, tried giving him whole milk - ended up calling 911. After that he's been on soy milk since. You can get a lot of soy products at Whole Foods (Try asking the concierge for products without milk, egg or tree fruits, they might help you out).

A great support group/resource is POCA (parents of children with food allergies) of DuPage. They have quarterly meetings , newsletter & a website. Actually they have a meeting tomorrow (8/21) at 7pm in Downers Grove. If you go to their website, you'll get the details.
It's not easy dealing w/ food allergies- but with proper support and guidance, it becomes manageable! By the way, I agree that you should stay away from soy- just look into all the research (e.g. www.mercola.com) Wish you all the best, Zorana

I do not, but go on Cafemom.com. It's a meeting place for mom's only and they might have agroup that fits you. If not, you can start your own. It would be great long term on-linse support.

K.,
I am the mother of a child with allergies as well. My son is allergic to dairy and sugar (sugar is in EVERYTHING, by the way). I am not sure why the previous mom would suggest that you stay away from soy. I know that there is some controversy, but you want to make sure that its not genetically modified.

We actually found out about the dairy when we were weaning him from breast milk. My son got breast milk until 14 months and then we went to soy. There is great (ok, well its not GREAT, but he doesn't know the difference), soy yogurt, soy icecream. You name it and there is a soy equivalent to anything dairy!

There are tons of allergy cookbooks, I would do a google search and then you will see what is out there.

I do agree with going to Whole Foods, Trader Joes, etc. Prepare your foods with the least amount of ingredients. Chicken with fresh veggies or something like that.

Once you get into the groove of it, its ok. Its really hard to go out to dinner. We often pack something for him.

They (whoever *they* is) that something like 50% of kids grow out of their allergies by the time they are 3 and 80% by the time they are 5. We didnt fall into the 3 category, my fingers are crossed for the 5s!

Let me know if you'd like more info.
