Child Throwing up After Watching a Movie?

My daughter plays with a girl in our neighborhood. Sometimes the neighbor comes to my house and sometimes my daughter goes to her house. The neighbor girl has two brothers. One brother is right around 4 years old. She told us one day that her family went to see The Purge and it was the second one, I think? Anyway, she said it scared her little brother so much that he threw up. Has anyone heard of this before? When she told me this, it made my heart hurt for him.

What can I do next?

i'm pretty relaxed about kids' friends and their family choices, but i'd have to take a step back from a family so idiotic that they'd take a 4 year old to see a graphic horror film.
this post smells a little.
yes, a child might well vomit after being subjected to a high level of realistic gore and terror. when i was 11 'hush hush sweet charlotte', even the heavily edited tv version, sent me screaming to my parents and gave me nightmares for a while. and i have never been particularly squeamish.

To those below who don't believe that can happen -- that used to happen to me when I was little, followed by weeks of nightmares. I can vividly recall the movies that terrified me and made me throw up. It had nothing to do with candy. I will still throw up when I'm severely emotionally traumatized.

Who the heck brings a 4 year old to see The Purge or The Purge 2?

Some of you are so lucky to have never been so upset that it makes you sick but it is possible.

Yes, throwing up when scared or having any strong feelings is a normal response. My stomach has been queasy more than once when feeling upset.

Of course he may have thrown up because he ate too much candy, drank too much soda or his parent yelled at him for being scared.

No way of knowing.

If they took a 4 year old to see the purge, then I'm not surprised, and depending on the age of your child, I wouldn't let her go over there as their supervision is low.

That movie is about an annual crime free-for-all for a day - blood, violence, cruelty, etc. It's loud, it's violent, and it's mean. So yeah, a 4 year old may have been freaked out by it.

I worked at a movie theater for 7 years. I'll never forget how much kids threw up in Alien Resurrection. Why their parents took them to that I'll never know.

Throwing up can be a reaction to very strong and negative emotions like fear and anxiety.

My husband and I have seen both the Purge films, the first was better than the second, but neither should ever be viewed by children as young as that, they are too violent are the plot is going to be way to confusing for a 4 year old.

My children are 14 and 12 and I don't think I would let either of them watch it.

I am way too scared to see that movie! The idea of taking a child to see it is terrifying!

I think I'd get sick, too.

I think this is my biggest pet peeve. I do not understand parents taking young kids to see R rated movies. And then they don't understand and actually get PISSED that the kids want to sleep with them, or wake up screaming or any number of night time issues afterwards. Not to mention us ADULTS who don't need to hear the kids talking, asking questions, wiggling around, throughout the whole thing. So yes, I'm pretty sure it's "normal" for a young kid to throw up after watching The Purge. We saw it and although it of course was not scary to us, we are not 4. =0/

Sometimes kids make up things to be interesting or shocking. I doubt the family even took their four year old to that movie.
You can't believe everything children say, don't you know that?
Unless you heard it from an adult, take it with a large grain of salt.

What kind of idiot takes a child to that kind of movie? If I were in your shoes I would first find out if it is true and then offer to babysit the kids when the parents want to go see this kind of movie. Lastly, I would probably not let my kid play where basic parental judgement is lacking. So sad.

And yes, of course, a child can get so upset and scared that he throws up from fear.

I must start by saying I haven't heard about this movie - I guess I don't get out much - and I'll stay away from it because scary movies make me (want to) throw up.

Think about it this way. Go to a movie theater and you're seeing something larger than life - literally - on that screen. Imagine yourself as a four-year-old, and both picture and sound are overwhelmingly larger than life. Add frightening to that, and you'll get the picture. Nightmares couldn't be worse. And most four-year-olds don't have imagination and reality quite sorted out yet, anyhow.

Not all children are bothered by this, especially after they're used to going to films, but some children are. If the little boy were my child, I'd think carefully before taking him to another until he's older. My heart hurts for him, too.

That movie is supposed to be very graphic and brutal. My daughter let the kids see it and my granddaughter told me all about it. I was appalled!

I think that maybe this little boy ate stuff at the theater and that on top of graphic violence/suspense made the little boy produce more stomach acid which causes gas and bloating and can eventually cause puking up the offensive foods and stuff.

Poor kiddo, that's just sad parenting.

It's more likely that the kid overdid the snacks at the movie, or that he had a stomach virus and the timing was coincidental. Kids don't typically vomit from seeing scary movies.

Just because 2 thing occur at the same time doesn't mean there is a causal relationship. My guess is that he had something else going on (a virus, or too much popcorn). If he got very nervous and already had a belly full of buttery topping, the movie could have been a partial factor, but I doubt it's the total and complete cause. If the boy is very anxious about many things, that could be an entirely different problem, in which case it's not this particular movie but stressful situations in general.

Who knows if what the girl is saying is even true. Lots of kids make up stories or exaggerate to get attention or be shocking. So there's no reason to judge this other family unless you know for a fact what actually happened. This is how rumors and gossip starts, he said, she said, I heard, can you believe, blah blah blah.
