Child Support: How Soon, How Much? How Much for Lawyer Retainer?

I need to find a divorce lawyer & am wondering once I file the paperwork, how long does it take to begin getting temporary child support (Collin County)? How much am I likely to get for 3 kids, with his NET income being $72k? I think that once a court order is in place, he will comply.

I'm not sure if he will try to get custody or not. What should I expect for a retainer fee, for Plan A where he won't try to get custody, and for Plan B where we have a custody battle?

Any suggestions on a good lawyer for Collin County?

What can I do next?

Hi M.. Call Eric Higgins, his number is ###-###-#### and tell him you got his name from A.. Eric was my lawyer a couple of years ago and now I watch his youngest son (I have an inhome daycare). He is such a nice guy and a great lawyer. I have referred so many people to him and they have all agreed. Its expensive to get a divorce, just be ready for that but Eric won't "waste" your money. He'll get it done as quickly as possible and will make sure that you don't get taken advantage of. I hired a different lawyer (a women) first and was not impressed at all. While really nice, she would call just to talk and then charge me for those calls, flaked on things I wasn't willing to compromise on, basically she was in the wrong business. Eric was like having a big brother on my side, he really looks out for his clients and wants the best for them. You can get temp. orders right away so that child support starts immediately. I'm not sure what child support is for three kids, one is 20%, two 25%, so maybe 3 is 30%? You'll have to ask him. I know its a tough time right now, I wish you the best! A.

I have been through this a lot. It all depends on what you are trying to pursue. The more involved, the more it costs. for good. He is very experienced and tight with Collin Co judge. Marvin Jones - 75/Park in the big bank tower. ###-###-####. It will all go into place as soon as the court finalizes it. Sometimes this can be very quick.

If his NET income is really 72k/yr, you can expect about $1800/mo in child support for 3 kids. However, I urge you to really research what net income means, TX has a specific definition.

You can expect to spend around 10k-15k for the divorce if even 1-2 little things are contested. The cost quickly escalates if there are more disagreements. Normal retainer is around $5k.

our lawyer moved out of DFW, so I don't have anyone to recommend.

Hi M.,

I don't know all the answers but if you google Texas Attorney General it will answer all your questions. There is a % of your spouses year income that will automatically go towards child support.

My sister uses this website all the time to find answers to her questions.

Good Luck!

M.,
I know how hard financially and emotionally a divorce can be. I know child support is 20% for 1, 25% for 2 and I believe it's 30% for 3. I was NOT happy with the outcome w/my attorney which was David Small in Dallas but I know you can expect 3-5k for a retainer fee for a Good attorney. there are alot of things that didn't happen that should of happened in mine and unfortunately I can not afford to take him but to court.
It might be a good idea to write everything down and keep a journal and unless you can prove that he is an unfit father or vica verca it will be joint custody.
Good Luck
M.
