You should definitely have her get it. Especially if her daycare doesn't require it -then she needs it. My sons are 2 and 4 and had theirs on schedule with absolutely no issues or side effects.
Hi moms, I have asked a few questions lately about daycare. I am entering my 2.5 yr old DD in daycare after the first of the year. She is up to date on all her shots, except the MMR. I was just too afraid to let her have that one. I am not trying to spark a debate about the MMR, I know its a heated topic. I know the argument for both sides. I was figuring I would wait until next year to get her the shot because I read that next year the shot would be available in seperate doses. But with her entering daycare soon, I am wondering if I should bite the bullet and get her the shot. The daycare I chose does not require the MMR for admission, but I am a little afraid of her being exposed to anything another child may have. Moms out there who have little one's in daycare, how do you feel about this? Should I go ahead and get her immunized for MMR? Or stick to my guns and wait for the seperate doses? Thanks moms!
Thank you all so much for your thoughts and suggestions. I agree that she needs the shot. As afraid as I am of the side effects, I am more afraid of what measels, mumps or rubella could do to her. I just called the doctor and she gets the shot next week. Thanks again mama's!
You should definitely have her get it. Especially if her daycare doesn't require it -then she needs it. My sons are 2 and 4 and had theirs on schedule with absolutely no issues or side effects.
You should know that in 2005 an entire section of the Japanese public (thousands of people) stopped vaccinating their children with the MMR (because they were told of the supposed dangers). The autism rate continued to climb, which tells me one thing: the MMR does not cause autism. It is the largest scale study ever done.
Yes - I would get it. And it should be available now in separate doses.
I don't know what you are afraid of, but there is plenty to be afraid of with Mumps, measils or Rubella. Read about them...if you have found a daycare that lets kids not be protected, you can bet that your child will not be the only one playing rush and roulette, and there may be very little herd imunity for your child to keep her safe, an imunity that you get because other parents did something for you that you are not willing to do for your daughter...
Honestly, read about the deseases. Somehow, that has been lost in the debate, and was the reason anyone ever started looking for this miracle of vaccination in the first place. If we did not have modern medicine, you would not have the privalage of refusing it, and you would be one of the first in line to protect your child if you knew the darkness of living in fear of these illnesses.
I just don't see that you have much of a bullet to bite...I don't see it as sticking to your guns as much as I see it as circling the wagons and shooting in, and just hopping that your daughter does not take one of the bullets.

ABSOLUTELY!!!
Mumps has been trying to make a comeback, mostly because some people have gone out of their way to freak parents out about the MMR.
There are really very few risks with this vaccine. It's been out for a long time (I got it over 30 years ago) and it's only been made safer since. The only issue would be if she's allergic to any of the ingredients, which your doctor can help you discover (if she has know allergies).
You already know the possible (though very low) risks of side effects of MMR.
Look up what Measles, mumps or rubella would do to your child, and the stats on how prevalent those illnesses are becoming again because of people choosing not to immunize. Though an outbreak in your child's daycare is not likely, it is CERTAIN it would have devastating effects.
There is no reliable evidence that this vaccination does any harm.
There is plenty or reliable historical evidence that demonstrate how destructive these three diseases are to people. That is why the vaccination exists.
I would go ahead and get the shot.
I would be afraid of what other children have. My two oldest are in school right now and they are always bringing home notices of exposure.
I think it is important to know that this is a sensitive topic for me. I don't vaccinate 'lightly'. I am scared to death of the possible reactions but in the end, I am also concerned for my children possibly getting these diseases. I always spread out the shots as much as I can so I can watch the for reactions and know which immunization caused it.
I would talk to your doctor and go with what is recommended.
I personally would do it and get it out of the way. My 19 year old has always had his shots according to the typical schedule. My 4 year old has all hers. They have never had any problems with any, incuding the MMR.
Ah I understand your dilemma. My son is in daycare and brings home all kinds of germs (definitely gets sick a lot more than non-daycare kids) and so I'm good about keeping him up to date on shots. He's 18 months now and hasn't had his MMR yet though b/c I'm scared about that one despite all the research! However, I am worried about what would happen if there was an outbreak so will be giving it to him either at his next well baby or at the latest, when he's 2 years old. I asked my dr about the seperate shots and he said right now thats just a rumor, that the actual companies haven't said they're going to produce the 3 seperate shots so he doesn't recommend waiting for them to get on the market. I think at 2.5, your child should be fine. Get the MMR for his safety. I know its hard!
Get her immunized. Even if you are worried about the shot, which is your perogative, you should admit that the chances of her getting sick with everything will be higher in daycare, and Measles, Mumps, and Rubella are nothing to mess around with.
The daycare my daughter goes to is state certified and she has to be up to date on all her shots (makes her sound like a dog lol).
The only vaccination I asked for her not to have was the chickenpox vaccine. However, the nurse went against my wishes and gave it to her anyways (thats a totally different story).
I did a lot of research on vaccinations while I was pregnant. Like the other mom said, the only one my daughter hasn't and probably won't have is the H1N1 shot.
Thankfully, she has never been sick from daycare. My daycare lady is awesome and everything is santized every day/night.
My son got his MMR when he was 14 months old and he did just fine with it. No side effects or anything on his behalf. My sons pediatrician told me that measels were spreading among daycares in the area. My son isnt in daycare, but goes to indoor playgrounds and parks a lot and I am glad I got it for him.
I actually was in the almost same situation a couple months ago. Same age child, same immunization situation. I did not give him MMR. I have stopped all immunizations until he starts kindergarten. Yes, there are no studies that say that immunizations cause any of these multitude of problems but I do feel that they are done on the general population and have not identified certain children that may be predisposed to be "at risk". I personally would hold off. Your daughter is going to get sick a lot more but it's unlikely to be measles, mumps, or rubella.
We don't get shots because they don't work on us. We learned the hard way and that's a long story. The MMR though I would not worry too much about. You will have to get the state waiver since she is not up to date. The Prevnar is what I would be concerned about her having, and would make sure my children had if the vaccines actually worked on my children.
Some places require full immunization before they can start.
I'm more afraid of the diseases than I am of the vaccinations.
Might as well get the shot and get it over worth.
I would give her the shot. I have three children and always given them the shots. The only thing I didn't give them was the swine flu shot. You have to go with your guts most of the time. Weight the cons and pros, and decide what is best for you and your family. I thought I rather give them the shots than them getting sick and giving it to one another. It is also more risky when you get older. But by all means, if you want to just wait to do it next year.
Blessings
Personally, I felt better having the immunizations prior to starting daycare. My son has had all of his "required" shots, but then again I am not anti-immunization.
I would be more afraid of your child contracting M-M-or R than the effects of the shot!
My kids got all their shots on schedule more or less, I did not let them get more than 2 at a time, so often had to go back in a month to finish shots. With so many people not vaccinating, I wanted my kids protected since many of these diseases are making a major comeback. If I were you, I would get the shot.
There are ways to boost your child's immune system without vaccinations. I'm on the fence on this issue. My kids and I have had severe reactions to vaccines, my sister had an adverse reaction that caused her to be taken to the hospital by ambulance, and my brother got injured permanetly from a vaccine. But at the same time, I like the idea behind vaccines, and a lot more people take them and do fine, than those who don't and who have problems with them. They say the safest way to take it is to do them separately and wait until age 2. Is there a way to wait and not put your child in daycare? I don't put my 8 month old in the church nursery because I don't want him getting sick every week. I'd pray about it and then whatever way you're leaning, to go that route. I wish you the best.
Do whatever you feel is right.
Just know this about daycare - your child will be sick a lot no matter what you do.
