Child Coughing

OK. So my daughter recently had a round with RSV (possibly, her cousin had it) and she had an ear infection. I gave her the antibiotics for the ear infection and it appears to have gone away. However, the cold or RSV (she was never tested for it) seems to still be lingering. She still have been coughing a lot especially when she is sleeping (poor kid is coughing right now during the night). I guess my question is should I take her to the doctor to see if it's something of concern, or wait it out since if it is a cold, you are really limited to what you can give kids these days (she's only 18 months old). Oh she does also has a bit of a runny nose that seems to run like a faucet at times. I hate hearing her cough and wish I could take it away and deal with it myself.. Any advice is welcome, especially if any of this sounds familiar. THANKS!

What can I do next?

Hi S.,
I would take her to the doctor just to make sure it was RSV or maybe it could be croup because it could be symptoms of either. There are some really nasty bugs going around right now I just took my daughter in and she has a ear infection and croup . At least taking her to the doctor will give you a piece of mind. Good luck I hope your little one feels better. Hey do you have a humidifier to put in her room to help with her coughing fits? Good luck!

My daughter has a cough too which is the end result of a double ear infection. There is not a whole lot you can do for them. My pediatrician told me that it was just her body's way of getting rid of the infection. You can pat her back when she coughs to try and get her to cough it out or you can "try" to have her lay on her belly while she is up and see if she will "spit-up." I have been giving my daughter Peppermint baths which helps loosen the phlem in her throat. I use Dr. Bronner's organic hemp soap. It is probably the same thing as the Johnson's Vapor Bath.
Good Luck. I would even call the nurse at your pediatrician's office just to ask, just for a sense of comfort.

I would try using a humidifier in her room at night. Also, prop up the head of her mattress to help with drainage. When my son was in a crib, I would put 2 pillows between the mattress and boxspring to tip him up a little. Now he's in his own bed, I pull the mattress slightly over the frame so his head is elevated. It helps them to not be laying flat when they have a cough and cold. Other than that - lots of fluids!!! Hope it passes soon!!

My question is if you think it is RSV, why would you NOT get her tested? Yes there is no med for it but it can get serious very fast.
She may have developed pnemonia.
My DD has had it 4 times and she isn't even 3 yet, so please take my advice and get her to the doc.

I am going through the same thing right now. My daughter has RSV and she had a double ear infection (she is 9 months old). The antibiotics worked great for the ears but her ped. has her doing breathing treatments twice a day and said that the cough may last a couple of weeks. Because of her age there is really nothing to do but ride it out. I did put a cool mist vaporizor in her room and that has helped a litte. Hang in there, I know its tough.

Try a cool mist humidifier in her room at night, it will help loosen her chest for easier breathing. This sounds wierd and I have never had to try it but some of my friends have talked about a neat vicks vapor rub treatment. You put the vapor rub on their feet and put socks on before bed. It's supposedly amazing and takes the cough away all night. I have heard a few friends say it works wonders. It works for adults too! Remember the cough is usually the last thing to go away when you are sick. It can last up to 3 weeks after the cold symptoms are gone.
Best of luck!

Yep, take her to the doctor. My 19 month old just got over RSV (also got it from her cousin).
My doctor gave her an antibiotic (not sure if it was for the RSV or for other symptoms) and told me to give her OTC cough medicine. I gave her Delsym. Because of her age, I gave her just under 1/2 teaspoon. I think I gave her 2 mL. It worked great.
The cough did linger on for a while. And it seemed worse at night and first thing when she woke up.
But, I recommend seeing the doctor.
Also, take her in the bathroom and turn on the shower to hot. Sit in the bathroom with the steam for about 20 minutes or so. That helped my daughter.
We also put Baby Vapor Rub on her back.
Good luck.
