Hi, just wondering if anyone's ever had experience with their child being on Risperidone? If so, what was the reason why he/she took it? What were his/her specific side effects? What were the benefits? Does he/she still take it?

Thanks for any and all of info =)

What can I do next?

Love, love, love Risperdal! Our 11-year-old son went on it during eating disorder treatment last year to curb negative repetitive thoughts about food. It not only helped with that, but eliminated his ODD. It was a fantastic medication for him and made tremendous, positive changes. It also made him hungrier, which was a very good thing.

Unfortunately, with the regular blood work required while on this medication, they discovered his prolactin levels were elevated, which can lead to male breast development. We had to pull him off of it. I seriously wanted to cry. Even our son didn't want to go off of it.

He was moved to Abilify after that and it took a lot longer to work, but now is beneficial, too.

My sister has been on it for two years.. She used it for her autism... while it did calm her a bit, it made her gain a ton of weight without diet change and lactate. They commercials aren't kidding :( But they switched her to something else.. so I'd say 5/10 for effectiveness, but side effects are horrible (for her).

My son was on it for autism spectrum and it was the first one I fought to get him off. Kid would eat next to nothing and gain weight. When we took him off he went back to being a bean pole in two months. I was a shocking thing to see. When we took him off we saw no changes in behavior.

He has been off for four years and can still fit in the clothes he had when he was on it, okay, they highwater, but you get the idea. Knowing what I know now I would not have allowed them to put him on it.

My 11yo grandson has been on risperdone for a couple of years for anxiety and acting out. He has ADHD and Aspergers as well as some learning disabilities. He is calmer and can more easily manage his behavior.

The only side effect of which I'm aware was incontinence on a higher dose. Once the dose was reduced he was fine.

The only thing I know about it (Risperdal is another name for risperidone) is the TV has plastered ads about it regarding some law suit due to some guys developing breasts (Gynecomastia) from taking it.
