Child All of a Sudden Wakes up in the Middle of the Night

We just got over having some pretty bad colds, and the girls were waking up every 2-3 hours because their little noses were so stuffed up. Now one of my daughters is still waking up every 4-5 hours, when she use to sleep through the night. I'm thinking it is because we were going to them while they were sick and now she expects it. Usually we feed the girls at 830pm and they sleep all night and are actually woken up by us at 630am to go to daycare. We got up at 1am last night, fed her and she only took 3oz. Then she started crying at 5am this morning. I told my husband to not go in there, to let her cry. She ended up crying/fussy for 20 minutes than falling back to sleep.

Should we continue to do this, so she goes back to sleeping all night? Have any of you ever had your child revert back to not sleeping? Any suggestions on why she is all of a sudden waking up...and doesn't seem to be that hungry. Thanks!

So What Happened?

My girls are 4 1/2 months old. And I am happy to say they slept through the entire night last night. I guess we just needed to get through this cold and remind them that they can sleep all night long. It was fun going in their rooms this morning and seeing these huge smiles on their faces. They must be feeling MUCH better! Thanks for all the advice. At times you just need some reinsurance that you are doing the right thing!!!

Hi J D,

You did the right thing this morning. It won't take long and she will be back in her old routine. It's so hard to believe how quickly they learn that you will be there when they cry. As long as you know she is okay, it will be fine to let her fuss it out. This happens all the time to children and parents, and you just have to tough it out.

Good Luck!!!

Became a new habit let her cry it out, may take a few nights but she'll be back to sleeping through the night.

I think you're right, it's just a habit. Don't feed her, but don't think you have to let her cry either - maybe just laying your hand on her will reassure her enough until she gets back in the sleep habit.

You don't say how old your girls are. My daughter just started doing the same thing. She's only 12 weeks old, but has been sleeping through the night since 5 weeks. (Going to bed between 10 and 11 and waking up between 5:30 and 7:00.) But the last 5 nights now, she's woken up around 3:00 crying uncontrollably until we give her a bottle and then she's right back asleep. She's also drooling a decent amount, so not sure if she is starting the teething process earlier than average or something else? She's still kind of young for me to want to let her cry it out. But I'd love to hear if your daughter returns to normal on her own or not.
