Chicken Pox - Detroit,MI

Hey mommas. While bathing my five year old tonight I noticed several bumps (less than10) on her chest. She had complained after school that her clothes were itchy and changed. I didnt think much of it at the time.
I didnt switch detergents within the last few days, but its the same brand-just 'free and clear' now.
My 9 year old son has had them in the past. But she has not yet.
Do I keep her home for observation (which I'm leaning towards)?
Her temp is 971
No other complants recently.
I volunteer in her class in the AM and am worried that if I dont show up they will have no volunteers. Silly, I know.

So What Happened?

Thanks all. I really just wanted some adult feedback-and it was too late to call anyone.
She does have all of her vaccinations-but I thought they could still get the pox if exposed. I havent had shingles myself-but have seen te havoc they wreak on a person.
This morning many of the bumps have cleared up. So, I guess I'll switch back to our regular detergent just to be safe. She isn't normally sensitive.

She got the chicken pox vaccine didn't she? I would not want my child to ever have to experience shingles. It is the most horrid pain that I have ever felt and mine were so mild.

Anyway, that doesn't sound like chicken pox to me. Most of the time they get the high fever then break out in the tiny blisters. See how she does in the morning. If they are runny and everywhere don't take her. But I've heard once they break out and then crusted over they are safe to return to school.

It doesn't sound like chicken pox to me, to be honest. Usually there is an elevated temperature associated with chicken pox and your daughter should feel bad.

Instead, it sounds like she got bit by something. I would worry about scabies (which my kid got outside and it was just awful. I put calamine lotion on him, thinking it was poison ivy, and it gave them a place to lay their eggs!! Never do that!)

I would want to take her to the doctor to find out what the diagnosis is so that you know what to put on the bumps.

You could have a breakthru case of pox. My friend's daughters did, one far worse than the other. I would see what they look like in the morning. If you think it's not just a bug bite, keep her home. The class can deal with no volunteers vs being exposed to chicken pox. Remember, it's not just the kids (who may have had the vaccination), but everybody else (shingles). Hoping it's just a bug bite.

See how they look in the morning and if they have multiplied.

So, no chicken pox shot?

Most kids would not be hurt by exposure to it. But there are kids that are immunosuppressed and would be hurt by getting the virus. Or they might have a sibling that would be effected by getting it. Try not to spread it, volunteer or not.

Call your school nurse or go by and have her look at the bumps.

Sounds a lot like eczema. It can present itself as independent bumps as well as a rash (which most people expect). They are very itchy. She could easily have gotten into something at school which caused a reaction. Either way, it doesn't sound like chicken pox.
