Chicco Keyfit 30 and the Shopping Cart?

Updated on June 08, 2011

We just brought our son home 2 weeks ago and made our first trip to the supermarket. I thought every infant carrier fit onto the shopping cart but it doesn't appear that ours does. Has anyone else had this problem? Does this mean I never have to go to the grocery store again? ;)

What can I do next?

yes, the Keyfit does not sit the normal way in a shopping cart. This is the main reason why we chose the Baby Trend.
BUT... try setting it in the seat portion of the cart sideways. It won't clip to the cart, but it will sit down deep enough that it won't shift around.

Unfortunately the Chicco doesn't fit (on the top part of the cart like some others). What I did was either put the whole carseat in the shopping cart and just pile the food around it, or when my daughter was that young - put her in the Baby Bjorn and shop that way. The baby bjorn was good in a way too b/c people leave you alone when they can't see the baby's face. in the beginning, this was good b/c I wanted to get in and out of the store as quickly as possible.

J.,

The Chicco infant seat only snaps into the Chicco strollers. However it isn't safe to put ANY infant carrier into the seat portion of a shopping cart. I have done various things from putting the infant seat in the basket protion of one stroller while pushing the grocery filled second cart to having my daughter in an umbrella stroller and pushing her while pulling the shopping cart. And the best one yet just shop at night after they go to bed or when your spouce can watch the baby. And of course since your baby is still small you can use a sling/Moby wrap/Ergo type carrier.

Good luck,
L. M

If you don't have to go to the grocery store anymore I'll be buying a Chicco carrier immediately!

I agree with Liz D 100%. I'm a fan of Slinglings in particular. There are also patterns out there on the internet and most of them are super easy to make. One other thought: the smaller and younger your baby is the easier it is for both of you to get used to the sling (though it's probably never too late), so I recommend giving it a shot soon!

I have a Graco not a Chicco but mine doesn't totally fit either. I still put the carseat in the seat the best I can. I find it's the easiest way to shop rather than use the Bjorn. It never latched on completely but it would be tight enough. I am never worried about the carseat falling out of it because I am right there and I push the cart slowly. If I only have a few things to get, I'll put the carseat in the big section of the cart where groceries go but it takes up so much room! So unless I have a small amount to get, the baby needs to go in the front seat instead...Good luck!

I have the Chicco infant car seat and stroller traveling set and my car seat never fit in the grocery cart. Most other infant carriers do. It's the one draw back I found with this brand. I used a snugli when he was little. It worked better than not having my hands free. Good luck! :)

I had (my son is now 2yrs) that Chicco Keyfit and I had no problems. It's not an exact fit, you need to just tilt the front forward a little and it will fit nice and tight. It sits more upward that you are used to, but no need to panic.

I always put my babe in a sling and carried him that way. Best of luck. R.

Yup..you are right...I love my chicco keyfit, but found the same thing! When my son got a little bigger I put it in the cart where the carseat goes, and something about the weight of the baby kept him in okay (although I did always keep my hand on it!) When he was really little I would put it in the part of the cart where I put the food or else bring him to the store in the bjorn. What a bummer though!

I bought the Chicco Keyfit for my son as well, and assumed the same thing! Unfortunately, I still had to go to the grocery store. Some stores have larger than normal carts, so I would keep him in his carseat and just place it in the back, and pile the food around him as creatively as possible.

I solved this problem by getting a Weego- it can function as a front or backpack, and you can wear baby facing in or out when on the front. You can use it from newborn up to 18 mos or 2 yrs and it offers neck support to those under 5 months. My daughter loved riding around this way with me, and it made shopping very easy, and I didn't have to deal with figuring out how to manage her in a wrap.

If you mean in the front where the bigger kids sit you should never ever ever put your carseat there they even say that on the car seat! Its not safe. If you go shopping with your husband push your baby in a regular stroller if you are by yourself then wear your baby. My son is 2 yrs and I still don't go anywhere without my slingling they are the greatest :)

We had the same problem. I ended up just using my baby bjorn that worked great in the store. If I brought the car seat in, it took up the whole carriage not allowing any room for food.
Congratualtions on your new addition!!

I have/had the same seat and it does fit in the shopping carts, it just sits a little more forward. I was nervous the first time I put my daughter in the cart because it looked higher than other children's seats I saw at the store but I can assure you that is how I took her shopping, every week for months with no issue whatsoever.

I had an older graco snugride & it didn't fit in the front part of most carts either - except Target! For some reason it fit there. ANyway, I did a combination of things, depending on how much shopping I was doing. 1) Carry her in a Bjorn (slings never worked for me) 2) got a snap & go stroller that the carseat DID fit in and used the bottom of that plus a handheld basket if only getting a few items and 3) as others have said, I would put the carrier in the main part of the cart & pile food around her.

Congratulations!!

Hi, Congrats on your baby's arrival! I had a different brand of infant seat but it didn't fit either. I either put it in in the bottom part of the cart and limited what I bought or, if the baby was awake, took her out of the carseat and put her in a carrier. My baby and I didn't do well with slings but used the Bjorn when she was tiny and then, as she got a little bit bigger, the Ergo.

I am having the same problem. I either have to take up the entire shopping cart with his car seat or push a stroller and have someone else push the cart. Such a pain in the tush and I wish I read about that somewhere when I was registering for it :-/

I found many do NOT fit, i leave the safety bar up and either a) put the baby and carrier in sideways in the top basket, or have to put the baby in the cart, which is not helpful for shopping.

I dont know where you live, but most stores have shopping carts with built in infant carrier seats. I used to bring a recieving blanket to cover it with before i put them in it. Hannaford & Walmart both have them.

I have the same carseat and faced the same disappointment the first time I tried bringing my baby (who now is almost 1 1/2 and so fortunately can sit up in the cart) shopping. I love the carseat otherwise, but what an oversight on the part of the manufacturer!

Some grocery stores have carts with infant seats already attached, so look for those. You could also try using a sling, which is what I did. I'll put in a shameless little plug for my business here (you won't find better prices and cuter fabrics elsewhere): www.eieiobabygear.com.

There are two options. I have seen people put the carrier in the larger part of the cart and the husband or whoever is with you pushes the other cart for the food. Then the option my husband and I used most of the time... Use a front carrier. This always eased my mind anyway because I could feel by baby girl breathing and knew she was okay. We used the front carrier a lot until our daughter learned how to sit up on her own in the cart seat and learned how to walk. We bought her one of those cart liners, but for some odd reason the only way to hold your child in the seat with it is not very secure. Our daughter kind of tilted to the side because the belt was not attached to the seat.
Hope this helps.

Hi J.,
Do you have a baby carrier like the Bjorn or another maker? I used my Baby Bjorn to go to the market when both of my kids were young.

My suggestion is to get yourself a good sling and don't bother with those bulky contraptions. Having your baby in a sling is so much easier, convenient to shop in, not as costly, better for the baby, and you can nurse in it discreetly while you shop! I like my ring sling (I have a Babyland sling, but there is also Over The Shoulder Baby Holder and the Maya Wrap) there are also pouch slings (like Kangaroo Korner) that work very nicely as well. If you don't already have one, invest in a sling! It will be the best thing you purchase and make you life so much easier!
