Chicago to Door County & Back

We're heading up to Door County from the Chicago 'burbs with our 3 year old and would like to plan a few stops along the way so we can let him burn off some energy after sitting in the car. We've already put the Jelly Belly Factory, Milwaukee Children's Museum and Sheboygan Children's Museum on our list of possibilities, depending on how we are all feeling, traffic, whether he naps, etc.

Do any of the Moms out there have additional suggestions for places to stop for an hour or so? Places not to far off the interstate would be much appreciated!

Thanks!
K.

So What Happened?

Thanks, everyone! We had a great trip, both getting there and back, and while we were in Door County. On the way up, it was the Jelly Belly Factory in Pleasant Prairie, WI, then lunch and the Above and Beyond Children's Museum in Sheboygan. On the way back, it was the Betty Brinn Children's Museum in Milwaukee. (We have reciprocal membership privileges through the DuPage Children's Museum, so we could visit the museums for free.) I didn't know about the Bay Beach Amusement Park, so thanks for that recommendation. It didn't work with our son's naps in the car this year, but It'll definitely be on our "to-do" list for our next trip. The zoo is another great recommendation...we may tag along with Daddy on a business trip to Milwaukee next week, so if the heat eases a bit, we may try it out!

You might want to check out Bay Beach Amusement Park in Green Bay - no parking fee, no admission fee. It has rides. Tickets are 25 cents and most rides take 1 or 2 tickets. It's a cheap stop along the way. Are you sure you want to stop in Milwaukee, then again in Sheboygan? They're pretty close.

Have a great time in Door County! If you need ideas of what to do up there with a 3-year-old, let me know. We've been going up every year for more than a decade.

Green Bay has Bay Beach Amusement Park where the rides are only 30 cents a ride. Also, the park just opened the roller coaster this year. I used to go there often as a kid and also worked there during the college years.

I have not been to the Milwaukee Zoo in years so I'm not sure what it is like now but it used to be very nice, much nicer than the Brookfield Zoo. Have a good trip; it sounds like fun!

We have made this trip every year since our daughter was born. We actualy went twice the summer she was born. Everytime we have gone we have only stopped once in the 5 hour trip. We stop at a McDonalds in Shaboygan and keep on going. We plan to leave early in the morning when she is happiest. We make sure to pack a portable DVD player and lots of things to play with in the car. We were just up there over the 4th and LOVED it once again. My daughter is 4 and on the way there she played with her dolls and watched two movies. On the way home she slept 1/2 the time and played the other 1/2. In fact we drove straight through to get home. One thing that helped us on our trip (this one and one we took in june to california...4hr flight!) was to have a few hidden new things to do in the car. When she was getting a bit restless we surprised her with something new. They were little things like a color wonder book and markers, etch-a-sketch, new doll accessories for her bitty baby, a new vreader book for her vreader, a new dvd...etc. My opinion has always been not to prolong the trip. Getting in and out of the car tends to make my daughter grumpy and the "are we there yet" starts coming out.

All that said, enjoy the beautiful weather! We absolutely love Door County and so does our little one.
