Chia Pet

Hi ladies,
Is a Chia Pet a lame gift for a 3 year old? I'm thinking about getting one for my cousin's baby. He has tons of clothes and toys so I thought it would be neat for him to watch it grow. My son is only 1 year old so I don't know if this is appropriate.
I'd love to hear your thoughts.

What can I do next?

M.,

Could be cool...if they kiddo was into that kind of stuff. Plus, they have all kinds of characters now. You could include a little shovel and bucket set. Target has cute gardening stuff for kids at low prices.

Happy Holidays!

I have a 7 year old daughter and a 3 year old son. My daughter is constantly asking if she can have a Chia, and my son could care less. I suggest you wait a few years.

I think he would enjoy seeing the plant grow. My son wanted a chia pet and was thrilled when he got one. He was a bit older I think at the time- about 8, but he asked for one.

I think it's a creative gift. It's like a science experiment. Just think of the success this little 3 year old will feel when he sees it begin to grow in just a short time.

I am not exactly sure if the chia pet is the perfect gift. In our family we started giving stock. The kids get so many toys and clothes. The stock can be realy inexpensive stock and then showing them how to look it up later is realy fun. J.

My daughter turned 3 two years ago (December) and specifically had a Chia Pet on her Wish List. She saw the commercial and just couldn't stop talking about it. Santa brought her one and she loved the whole process - planting the seeds and watching it grow. It was a Daddy n Me project. I don't think it's lame at all and it's educational. Kids love to watch things grow and enjoy the suspense of when it's going to happen, etc. and they are proud that they participated in the experience (watering the seeds etc.) Now if you gave a Chia Pet to a grown up, they might think it's lame. ;)

Hi there,

I'd take a pass on that as a gift. He's a bit too young. Nice thought, but save it until he's 6 or 7.

I have a 3 year old and a 10 year old. I think the Chia Pet would kind of go over my 3 year olds head just a little right now. On the other hand, I think it would be something my 10 year old would find interesting. So in my opinion, it might be just slightly premature, but all children are different in their maturity levels, so use that to determine as well.

Honestly as dorky as they seem, we even gave one as a white elephant gift last year, I think a 3 yo would LOVE it. My son is 3.5 and my daughter is 6, I think they would both enjoy one.

Hi, i must say i think Chia pets are fun! We just got one this year for the first time ever and we had a lot of fun watching it grow! I think it is a great gift ONLY IF there is a parent who will actually get involved and make it fun! If the parents are not going to take the time to be invovled and make it exciting, then it will be no fun. You could always get a neat picture book?

Yes, a chia pet is lame for a three year old. Sorry. If you don't want to go the toys or clothes route, how about a book? Good luck.

I think that would be a great gift for a three year old - it would be a little intro to gardening and where your food comes from without having to wait months and months to see the result, right up a three year old's alley!

Sorry but I would have to agree with the others, maybe not the the best gift choice. I am sure that some children would appreciate it, but it seems to be one of those fun things you buy just for the heck of it, rather than giving it at a special time like Christmas (unless that is something on the child's wish list).

I have a three-year old and a five-year old who both love gardening and watching things grow. I think it's a great idea. I think children this age would love this. It's the adults that might have an issue with Chia pets and their advertising. If you want something similar, which is the same concept and also very cute, I bought my kids these little frogs and ducks that are egg-shaped with the top open. They have little feet and painted faces and all. You just pour the water in and they grow "hair" that kids can watch get long or give a haircut to. They are really cute and can be found at Magical Child in Encinitas or Geppettos. Good luck!

YES, if you are going to spend what $10-$15 spend an extra $10 and go buy a US Savings bond for $25 if hes 3 it wont mature for about 10 yrs (if i recall may be longer) and will be perfect for him to go to college when hes 18.. esp if he has alot of toys and clothes already...

M., Since 3 year olds have a short attention span I doubt a growing plant is going to be THAT interesting.
How about a day with you for a present?!!
The three year old has undivided attention for a half a day or so and Mom has a nice chance to relax, shop or just catch up? Three year olds don't need more "stuff" you are right!! Have some fun and take photos of the good time and frame that! D.

My daughter (now 5) would have loved it! My boys (2 and 4) probably not as much. They're more into super heros though. It depends on the childs personalty. Double check with Mom if she thinks he'd like watering it and seeing it grow. If they have one his favorite animal that would make it pretty cool.
