I too, have a really hard time swallowing pills, of any side. My OB said that taking a chewable Flintstones Complete (must be the Complete kind) and one folic acid pill (super small) would be fine. She said that is what she takes too!
I have a terrible time swallowing pills! Before I was pregnant I took the chewable Centrum daily multivitamin. When I found out I was pregnant I bought 2 kinds of prenatal vitamins, knowing I needed more folic acid than than 400 mg in Centrum. I tried splitting them with a pill cutter but it made the edges so jagged that I still couldn't swallow them. Recommendations??
Thank you for your great responses. I love the moms on this site! I talked to a nurse and a pharmacist and have decided to continue taking the chewable Centrum along with an extra folic acid tablet.

My girlfriend had similar issues and found a product in powder form which she took throughout her pregnancy. Not only was it easy to take, but she also had a fantastic pregnancy.
I know she would love to share with you. Just e:mail me at ____@____.com and we can set up a time.

Hi-
I had HORRIBLE morning sickness with both my pregnancies so swallowing pills didn't work for me either. My Doc.s recommended taking the children's chewable vitamins (yes, like Flinstones). As a pregnant adult, you can take 2 chewables and get all the nutrition of a prenatal vitamin. Hope that helps!
Hi S.-
I have the same problem with swallowing pills. My OB wrote me a prescription for a chewable prenatal vitamin, yes, they do exist! :-) They are a little chalky, but I am used to that taste because I use lots of chewable pills/vitamins anyway. I would ask your doctor about it. I don't have the bottle with me, but let me know if you need the exact name and I can get it to you.
I drink a liquid pre-natal. If you want information on it, send me a message. Tastes good.
Nutrinate is a chewable prenatal vitamin you can get a perscription for. Don't get the generic, they do not taste as good. I had these and it made the whole process easier. YOu might have to experiment and take it before bed, or right when you get up. They did upset my stomach a little.
Good luck!
i had the same problem and took children's chewables but now i'll be happy to report there are chewable prescription prenatal vitamins. just have your doctor write it that way and make sure your pharmacist fills it that way.

I've had a hard time swallowing pills too, (I take a bunch of supplements), however I have just found that if I try to swallow more of them it was easier than taking them one at a time. My throat was able to open up much more for some reason. Maybe it is more like swallowing?
I am terrible at swallowing pills too. My doctor gave me a prescription for folic acid (the pills are tiny & only $4 at Walmart Pharmacy), and a prescription for prenatals (the pills are half the size of the regular horse pills). She also told me if I didn't want to take the prenatals, I could take 4 Flintstone chewables a day. LOL. She said as long as I take the 4, it will give me the same amount of vitamins. My doctor told me to take Caltrate for Calcium but I have trouble taking those. Instead of have been taking Viative chewables (one, twice daily), and lastly I am taking Omega 3 softgels, which are a lil' bit easier to swallow. Anyways, let me know what you think!!
Hi S.
Congrats on your pregnancy :) I always hated swallowing pills also. I now drink mine. Check out this video http://www.reliv.com/US/EN/Difference.html
This may or may not be what you are looking for but I do know many moms that used these products for prenatal and have had the best pregnancies ever. I used it as a prenatal during nursing and today (3 years later) my son has never been in for a sick visit! My two older children were always sick so I know this stuff works :)
Blessings,
L. O
Even though I can swallow pills no problem, the prescription prenatal vitamins made me sick. I had NO morning sickness once I started taking 2 "flinstones complete (with iron)". Check with your OB, but 2 Flinstones Complete were just fine. Can get them just about anywhere.
You should compare the ingredients in the pre-natal vitamins to the children's ones. They're probably extremely similar and you may be able to get away with taking one or two children's instead.
Hello there, I too hate taking/swallowing pills. I actually take the Viactive multivitamins that are chewable. My doctor and midwife both told me that there is enough folic acid in them for the baby and that I didn't have to take prenatals. I already have one child, who is fine, and have another one on the way due in a month. Don't know if you feel comfortable doing that but they are easy to take and taste good to me. Good luck.
I was very worried when i got pregnant because i have a hard time even swallowing ibproufen. But i started taking it with food, i would take a bite of banana chew it then slip the pill in and swallow it with the banana. It was a long road but now i do just fine taking it that way, and i still cannot no matter how much i try take it with just a drink of water. I hope you find something that works for you!
I cannot swallow pills that are of any size. I am pregnant with my second child, and each day I take one chewable children's vitamin plus a folic acid supplement (very, very small pill). I did that with my first one, and he was just fine. (When I compared children's vitamins to prenatal vitamins, it seemed that the only difference was the amount of folic acid.)
I too had a heck of a time swallowing the pills, not to mention the nausea that accompanied them. I switched to bars. I started taking BebeBars about 3 months in... I wish I would of found out about them from the get go. They are granola-like bars with all your prenatal vitamins for the day and I just eat them for a snack when I am on the go or whenever really. They aren't overly sweet, but taste great anyway. They are WAY better than taking those horse pills!
You can buy just plain folic acid, and it's a really tiny pill. When I was pregnant the prenatal vitamins were to big to swallow so my doctor told me to take a regular chewable multi-vitamin and a folic acid.
I know you posted a while back, but just in case anyone else has the same problem (as do I) Target sells a chewable prenatal vitamin. It is delicious too. Tastes like one of those sugar coated fruit chew candies. Good luck!
I know that I could not swallow these vitamins when I was pregnant due to my aweful morning sickness. I asked my OB if there were any other solutions to this, and she gave me a Rx. for a chewable prenatal vitamin. It was just like chewing a really big Flinstones vitamin! I loved it!
I have heard that you can chew two childrens vitamins instead of the prenatals. Ask your DR or Pharmacist.
I have the same problem,
Good luck

I don't know if there is a chewable prenatal vitamin. Prenatal vitamins upset my stomache so much that my doctor told me to use Flintstone's children vitimans. They are chewable and I took 2 a day. I had no added upset stomache from them. I would put a call in to your doctor's office first before trying this. Hope this helps.
A children's chewable with iron should be fine. You can supplement with an individual folic acid tablet which is tiny - usually smaller than birth control pills.
I have been told I could take Flinstone Vitamins.
i just ate flintstones complete with both my pregnancies. My Dr did the same with her 3 pregnancies. The flintstone completes have all that you will need. Have fun with the lil ones!
Vitamins have always upset my stomach so I just ate lots of super-fortified foods. Total for breakfast, fortified soy milk, Luna Bars (or any other fortified nutrition bar.) There are so many fortified-food options these days, it all adds up to a full RDA very quickly. I've heard that you absorb the nutrients better if they're in food, anyway. Good luck!
My OB said I could take two Flintstone vitamins throughout my entire pregnancy if I wanted. I compared the labels and if I took two, it was at least equal to a prenatal vitamin.
