My Puggle will NOT stop ripping apart his bed that is in his crate. Even when he's not in his crate! I am trying to find a "chew-proof" dog bed that someone has had a good experience with.

The apple bitter did not work either.

What can I do next?

I bought the bagel bed at Scratch and sniff in Oak Park. It was expensive but has lasted the last 2 years and is machine washable.

We have a weimaraner who is a little over 2 years old now, but was a chewer as a pup, and i kept going throught beds like crazy! So much so that i left him in his crate for awhile with NO bed...one, because i was tired of cleaning up the constant shredded mess, and two, hoping it would teach him a lesson. Eventually, i took pity on him in his barren crate, and sprung for a dog bed from Orvis. It's a chew proof, 100% guaranteed bed. It's called the Dogs Nest. (I think...it's been awhile since i bought it!) They have various shapes, sizes, and patterns to choose from. The one i got cost around $100.00, but i had to get a larger bed because of my dog's size. Normally, i would never spend that much on a bed, but when i got to thinking about how many $20 beds i've had to throw away and repurchase, it made sense! Orvis has a 100% satisfaction policy...if your dog does manage to somehow chew/tear the bed, they will replace it for free! Indefinately! That sounded like a good deal to me. And yes, the bed is worth the cost. Before the Orvis dog bed, i even went so far as to get a tie-down bed, which fits the exact length of his crate floor, and is secured by zip ties attatched directly to the crate! The idea behind it was so they could'nt pull up any corners to start chewing, plus the fabric was made of a special hardened nylon that they claimed to be chew proof, but was'nt. Let me tell you, that bed was a pain to clean! Any time it needed washed, you had to cut off all the zip ties, then replace them all (Like 40 of them)! NOT worth the hassle. Go to Orvis.com, and look up their dog beds. Don't let the initial cost scare you off...they are worth every penny! Especially since you won't have to go out and keep buying replacement beds! Good luck!

Hi my name is G. I also am a mom who is now ajusting to staying at home. I went from working full time to trying my own home business. Back to you and a chew proof bed. Well for one I don't think they have one. I also had the problem of my Rot. chewing anything up that I put in his cage. I tried everything from pillows to blankets to carpet cut to fit when I would get back home they were in shreds. I figured out after about a month of putting stuff in the cage to make him comfortable that he didn't want anything in there at all and I haven't had a problem since that dog is now 15yrs old. and I still have the same cage. Hope this helps. G.

We went through the same thing with our Husky - he chewed every bed we bought so I went to Kmart and just bought him an inexpensive twin blanket and folded it up in his crate. They cost about $5. They would last 2-3 months and then when it was too shredded, I would throw it out. It won't stop the chewing issue but it will at least cut down on the cost :)

Hi K.,
I don't have any suggestions for you, I just wanted to let you know I totally understand. We a a 4 year old puggle and could never find a dog bed that she would not chew on. She even chews on blankets. Hope you get some good suggestions. Sorry I couldn't help.

I do not have a suggestion either....we ended up putting nothing in the crate. We talked to several pet trainers, vets, etc...all said it was more than fine. Even when our dog was out of the crate, she would lay on the kitchen floor to nap.

I have found that there really isnt a bed that they cant chew. Its just when they get over that then you can get them a bed. She might need more exercise.

Drs Foster and Smith have pretty good, sturdy beds (we get a catalog, but I think they might have a website too). We have a 2 year old boxer who did the same thing. What helped for us was more activity . . .walks and runs in the park DAILY.

He was chewing because he had all this pent up energy. Dogs need to be out and running and "working out."

Now that he gets his (almost) daily walk, he's a completely different dog.

Good Luck!
B.
