Everything in the US has to be pasterized. We lived in Italy and the mozzarella there was not pasterized. As long as you get it from a known grocery store in the US then you should be fine.
My doctor told me to stay away from soft cheeses since they aren't pasterized. Most cheese lables that I am reading even the soft cheese are pasterized. But what about in resturants... Feta cheese for example should I just play it safe and stay away from it...

My doc never told me to stay away from any type of food with either of my kids except sodium with the first and that was at the end, bc i started swelling alot.
When I was prgnant I was told to stay away from soft cheeses such as: Feta, blue cheese, gorgonzola, brie...
Something in them could cause listeria..or lysteria.. I dont know how to spell it. What that is I am not too sure. I dont think a little will hurt...I just would eat a whole block of feta. know what I mean?
All cheese is pasturized unless it says on the package otherwise. I've searched very hard for unpasturized cheeses, as one doctor I saw insisted they were more healthy. I would not be surprised if it was actually illegal to even searve unpasturized cheese in this country.
Remember that half the doctors out there graduated in the bottom half of their class. Too, one person can't be an expert in everything. Read the labels and talk to an expert in nutrition.
Oh my gosh! I eat feta on my salad every day! I have never heard of this! I'll be glad to hear what people say!
Here is an answer.
I look lots of things up at kidshealth.com they are a great resource.

Well, I wish I could be of more help but I am in the same situation. My doctor has not really said anything but my pregnancy books say that. I am pregnant with my 2nd and with the first I avoided all soft cheeses but I really missed them. This time around- I've eaten them a couple of times but I'm still weary. I think they are all pasturized now- I think this is more a problem of the past but I don't know for sure. It's definitely worth more research.
Be aware of Mexican cheeses too, especially in Texas...go here for more info: http://www.customs.gov/xp/cgov/newsroom/news_releases/arc...
You didn't say if you were pregnant...that is the only real
reason you need to stay away from these cheeses. If you are pregnant, then yes, stay away from Feta, and real Blue Cheese (crumbles on steaks and in salads). The dressings are pasteurized so don't worry about that.
When I was pregnant, I tried to ask in restaurants abou their blue cheese and they have no clue, so don't trust them when they say "oh, yea they are pasturized."
My doc told me to stay away from cheeses like Feta, Brie, etc.
We have all been brainwashed to believe that pasteurization, fluoride, vaccines, prescription drugs are all the right things to do. But I have read enough to know that the truth does not make enough money for big business, and so feeding us a bunch of lies, keeping us unhealthy and keeping us spending is what it is all about. I like to eat raw unpasteurized cheeses, especially goat cheese whenever I can get it. I eat mostly organic, whole foods and rarely do I reach for the kind with preservatives. I am 42 and very healthy and do not take any prescription drugs. There is a lot of information out there if you are looking for it, but be careful who you listen to. To answer your question, YES eat feta especially the kind made from sheep's milk or goat. They are always better alternatives to cow.

A. - you may not even be wondering anymore but I thought I would respond to this. I stayed away from the soft cheeses and any of the cheeses with veining in them. Although a lot of the cheeses in the grocery stores are pasturized, a lot of the cheeses in restaurants are not. I eat out frequently with my husband and was surprised at how many cheeses are NOT pasturized that they cook with especially in a tapas style restaurant. As much as I loved those cheeses, I stayed away from them - after all, it is only 9 months and I found I did fine without them.
If it's made in America, it's pasteurized. You are doing great reading the labels. Don't be afraid to ask in a restaurant. They can find out for you. Most chains will use pasteurized everything. Smaller restaurants and nicer restaurants may use imports. The waiter or manager can find out for you, so don't be shy.
The concern is salmonella and lysteriosis. Both are bacteria that are killed with pasteurization. Lunchmeats are the true risk for lysteriosis, but can be eaten after they are cooked (1 min in the microwave is plenty).
Take it from a cheese lover and microbiologist. :)

U.S. laws grant the FDA enforcement for mandatory pasteurization for all milk and milk products. Listeriosis is a food-born illness caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. Scientific evidence shows that cheese, particularly soft cheese, provides a perfect breeding ground for these bacteria.
Healthy people typically recover quickly, but listeria can cause serious, even fatal infections in children and the elderly. I suggest you handle all milk products with due care, refrigerate immediately after buying. Order cheese in restaurants you know are clean.
Actually with the bad bacterias only found rarely in milsk and cheeses before pasturization you are losing all the good bacteria as well that is needed to maintain a healthy balanced system. The best thing you can do is to stick with RAW cheese and milk. People who are lactose intolerant and cannot handle dairy can usually handle raw dairy because of the healthier more natural balance.
Just my 2 cents... be sure and do your research.

I've been having soft cheese throughout my pregnancy. So long as the label says it is pasteurized my Dr. said it was fine. The worry is going to markets like Whole foods or Central Market (if you are in texas) where they sell imported cheeses etc. I've asked at a few restaurants and they'll gladly check for you. I haven't been to a place that had unpasteurized cheese yet. But you should double check with your dr. I also got an ok on some sushi eating, but that was mostly due to the amount I ate before I was pregnant and also I do try to avoid the high mercury fishes such as tuna, tho she said a piece every now and then would be fine.
Good luck!
