Hello fellow moms,
My husband lost his job about 7 weeks ago and we have finally been able to obtain medical insurance through a private provider. It is a bit pricy but much better than the COBRA but since my husband was on a pricy anxiety med they put a huge rider on his policy for prescription drugs. We have to cover a $700 deductable for his meds alone before they will pay anything. He is taking Cymbalta and I need to find it cheaper than the $145 for a 30 day supply at the drug store. Any ideas about what I could try. Our doctor has already been very generous and given us 12 weeks of free samples and I don't want to ask again for a hand out. Any help you can give would be great!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

it is so nice to have this network for us to share our knowledge with each other. Thank you for your support and advice. I feel like I have some new friends each time I log on to mama source. I went to the Cymbalta web site and was able to get another 2 week trial of meds for free for my hubby. Now he just needs to get a job before the free samples are out so that we can have some better insurance! Thanks everyone, and if there are more ideas keep them coming!

Paxil works great for Anxiety and it is only $4 at Walmart for a 30 pill packet, I have to take 40mg a day so it is $8.00 sometimes not using the newest drug out there is the best.

Laura below said Costco. She is correct - you don't have to be a member to use the pharmacy. There and Sam's both. You should be able to look up the prices online or call a local club to get a price quote.

Mail order meds! Check with your provider. It can save you a ton of money buying a 90 day supply.

Don't be to proud to ask the doctor again. Your husband's health is more important! Your doctor gets the meds free anyway!!!!!

You may call Costco - I just got an e-mail the other day that you don't have to be a member to get your meds there & they're supposed to be a LOT cheaper. Good Luck!

You can get most drugs from Canada cheaper and in larger supplies. Just go to canadadrugsonline.com. This is how I have to obtain my daughter's seizure medication because it's really expensive but about half the cost in Canada. The only bad thing is, some insurance companies won't cover meds obtained online. Mine won't. But that doesn't matter for us because they won't cover anything having to do with her seizures either - pre-existing condition. In your case, if they cover your husband's condition, but won't cover online meds, you'll have to figure if it's worth the cost to buy at full price at your regular pharmacy and plus whatever you will end up paying for it after you meet your deductible, versus the cost of always buying it from Canada. At $145 a pop for a 30-day supply, you'll be paying full price for 5 months. The other 7 months of the year will be "covered" and I use that term lightly! You will have to pay something, I'm sure. I don't know what dosage he is taking, but I just checked with canadadrugonline and the cheapest, 20 mg is $189 for 100 tablets. If he's taking one per day, that's over 3-month's supply. So that's basically $63 per month. There is also a $10 shipping fee, so you'd have to factor that in too.

The other suggestion is to use your voice as an American and vote for a candidate who is truly dedicated to fixing the current health care system so that it actually works for the people who need it rather than working only for the insurance and pharmaceutical companies. I wouldn't tell you who to vote for, but go to all three candidate's web sites and see what their health care plan is. I've had private insurance for three years and it has been a financial nightmare. Even though we're "fully insured" I had to pay over $20,000 out of pocket in 2006 and over $17,000 in 2007. No one in my family has any serious health condition. Under the current system, your best bet now is to avoid getting sick or injured in any way.

Even though I'm not a huge fan of Wal-Mart I would check there for anti-anxiety meds that are on their $4 list. I've taken zoloft and I've heard Paxil is good too. Who knows, maybe Cymbalta is now on the list as well. Good luck! Doesn't the American healthcare system just make you want to scream!?

You can always ask the doc to give you more samples worse he can say is no. Also you can get in touch with the maker of the meds they usually are able to help you out with costs and or giving you samples as well you would be amazed at all the ones that do this.
