It depends on where you live. On the whole I would say charter schools are better than regular public schools. They have to live up to the charter they set, parents MUST be involved, and usually kids MUST behave or get kicked out. I find it SO refreshing -kind of like all schools used to be before we decided we had to serve everyone no matter how much of a problem they insist on being!

I live intown, and the charter schools near us are FAR better than the regular schools. There is one regular school near here I would consider sending my child to, but otherwise I wouldn't send a dog to these schools. However, the charter schools are great! There have been a few that have come under fire for strange practices or not living up to their charter -just do your research. Of course there are plenty of areas that have lots of great regular schools too -it just depends.

Yes!
I am a supporter of charter schools. My daughter attended Fulton science Academy all three years. I was looking for an intimate environment, a math and or science focused charter school with an excellent teacher-student ratio and uniforms. I would recommend charter schools to anyone who wants a more specialized curriculum. My daughter now attends Alpharetta high school and her best grades are science and math and she is enjoying not having to wear uniforms and going to football games, etc.

My daughter attends a charter elementary school intown, and we LOVE it. There is another charter school near us though that I'm not as impressed by, but parents of students I know there are very happy with it. You have to look at the charter and see if the school's style is a good fit for your family and your child.

My 10-year-old son goes to a virtual charter school - Connections Academy and we LOVE it! I don't know about "normal" charter schools, but with our school he can go at his own pace - we can work longer on some areas and can go faster through others. Since he is considered "gifted", we didn't find that the school was adequately working with him, so we went this route and it's been great for us.

Just like with "regular" schools, I'm sure there are good and bad charter schools, you just have to do your homework.

We have been doing this since the beginning of 2008-2009 school year. Good curriculum, kids can go at own pace whether that is fast or slow, (more so in Connections than k12), interaction with teachers on line, great for family to stay together. We were home schooling before this and so it is hard in that I have never had to follow the schedule of someone else but other than that.... When school is done it is done and there is no homework. I would think there would be more family time when Dad is home in the evening because of this. I work my home based business around this and can take a day off and make it up on a different day including the weekends if I need to. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask!

Blessings!

I heard good things about the Drew Charter school. They are supposed to be better than public, depending on your location.
