Chapped Lips! - South Park,PA

Try neosporin LT, or plain neosporin...they seem to work well on my daughters chapped lips and cheeks.

I am a Carmex fan. Found in any drug store, Walmart, Target, convenience store. If my sons lips are chapped he usually won't let me help him so I put it on him when he is sleeping.

Stay away from using Vasoline or lanolin. Both are horrible for the skin. Vasoline is nothing but mineral oil which is recycled car oil. I'm not lying! I worked in the skin care business for over 17 years. Lanolin comes from a sheep. It's the excrement sheeps use to keep their wool water resistant. Neither of these items absorb into the skin well enough to help.

There are lots of products taht work. I let my 5 year old (6 in May) pick out his own from the store and he will put it on a dozen times a day. My husband who works outside uses Carmex, but the kids prefer the flavored ones, so they pick a flavor they like and he doesn't lick it off, he applies often. I also put on aquafor at bedtime, even after he's asleep if I need to.

I am a HUGE paula Begoun fan (they call her the "cosmetic cop") and she recommends staying away from "medicated" lip balm, as they can irritated and burn.
She recommends (and I just ordered from Ebay..half price) BeautiControl's LipApeel. It's a two-step process. She states "it is the only really gentle and effective product I've seen for lips. It's a bit pricey, but can last for years."
Paula has never steered me wrong...I highly recommend any of her books...she has saved me thousands, and she has always been dead-on with her product recommendations.

I use Auquaphor on Violet's redness around her lips(its better than VASELINE) and it goes away in a day...no tips on how to stop him from doing it except diversions until its healed completely...

My suggestion would be to buy the "overnight" chapstick/blistex stuff. Once he's asleep, put on a thick layer. They don't lick their lips as much when they are asleep, allowing good time for healing. This works for me, as well as my kids.

My two favorites for really chapped lips that ALWAYS work are Aquaphor and Satin Lips (from Mary Kay). My husband gets HORRIBLE chapped lips and swears by both (I know...it's crazy that a man would go for Mary Kay). Aquaphor is similar to vaseline, but, in my opinion, beter. If you have a Mary Kay rep, I would say to buy both and see which O. you like better. If you buy the satin lips, make sure you buy the lip mask and the balm. The mask will take off all of the dead skin (without it hurting a bit), and the balm will soothe. Good luck!

my son (10) has had the same problem, usually in the winter a couple of times during the season. We use AQUAPHORE. We put it on at night before he goes to sleep. Apply it all over and above the lips. He doesn't use it during the day, it is a little to greasy (I liken it to vaseline) for him to handle, sometimes he will use a lip blam during the day. The AQUAPHORE is really what works. It is made by EUCRINE and I swear by it. I started using it for a the 1 and only really terrible diaper rash he had. You can buy it in a tube or tub. Some places even sell small tubes you can put in your purse that are the size of a lip balm. It is in the baby isle or the lotion isle.

I love Blistex-make sure you get the medicated O.. It heals quickly. I even put it on my children's nose when they have a cold!

My youngest step-son doesn't get exactly what you are describing, he gets dry, cracked chapped lips every winter since he's been living primarily with his mom. Every weekend we spend three days making sure he drinks extra fluids and applies his Blistex every hour or two, and the lips are almost completely healed when he leaves us. Then he comes back the next weekend with the same problem. So, that is frustrating, but we know this works because we see the difference.

Hydration from the inside is also extremely important. Ask his teachers at school to allow him to have a few extra 'water breaks' so he can get a drink from the water fountain, or if they consider this too disruptive to class, ask is he is allowed to carry a water bottle to class that he must empty by the end of the school day(by drinking it, lol)

If you attack it from the inside and the outside, it should clear up almost completely in 3-5 days. You definitely want to take care of this, though. With chapped skin there can be hundreds of tiny little breaks in the skin and that leaves him vulnerable to all sorts of staph infections and/or even the dreaded MRSA.

My husband's ex laughed at us for making such a big deal over chapped lips, but it can become much more serious.

Badger Baby Balm works wonders on all skin that is chapped or irritated. (not open wounds). You can get it on line or if you live in the area, Nature's Way on Kirkwood Hwy in Wilmington, DE sells the products, and has samples to try. It is a really safe company for all skin care products, including sunscreen.

Carmex. If that doesn't work try a vegetable oil such a olive or coconut.

The only thing that works for my son (age 5 almost 6) is to avoid all chemical products on the lips (his skin reacts to the artificial colors and flavors), so I use emu or coconut oil, straight up to put on his lips. To really fix the problem for good, I increase the good fats in his diet by blending or drizzling flax, olive, or grapeseed oil onto/into his food. Takes care of the cause from the inside out, for us.

Sounds like my almost 5 yr old. He gets chapped lips that they almost crack and bleed he used to get it on his thumb from thumb sucking too. try Aquaphor healing ointment it is made by eucerin. you can get it at walmart in the beauty section where they have the johnson adult stuff. it should clear up in a day or two if he puts it on a few times a day then puts a good amount on before bed, it works well on chapped cheeks from wind burn too.

I just went throught the serious chapped lip thing with my daughter. I used blistex medicated she didn't like it too much but i had no choice her lips were pealing and red...she aslo had pretty nasty cold too just have him keep applying it all day.Hope it gets better. good luck

Petroleum-based products (i.e., chapstick, Vaseline) make my lips worse (petroleum is actually pretty harsh for skin). Try finding a non-petroleum-based product (I use "Silk n Shine" for my own lips). Steer clear of tasty things such as cherry-flavored.

You've gotten lots of good ideas for products, but the cure for the problem is more water. Put a humidifier in his room, and make sure he is drinking water like crazy!

Try Eucerin on them, especially while he sleeps. My kids all get very chapped lips and skin in the winter and it works great everywhere.

I'll sum up my suggestion in O. word--CARMEX. Get the stuff in the tube that looks like a tiny toothpaste tube and use it just like the vaseline. It isn't the best tasting stuff, so maybe he won't lick it off, but I swear by it for my chapped lips.

I'm 30 & still lick my lips even though I know better. I don't think you'll win that battle. You've gotten good product advice. I would also recommend running humidifiers in you home to return moisture to the air.

I have a different recommendation than some of the others. The best thing I have ever found and I swear by it is a Lip Balm called Sugar, it's by the skinline Fresh and it's found at Sephora. It has a lemon taste and it would cure my badly chapped lips within a few hours. I keep a stash of them on hand especially in the winter so I never run out.

Blistex Medicated is what we've used for years. Any time we used something else it didn't work. Chapstick is just wax coating. The medicated actually helps to heal the skin to help it stay moist.

There have been lots of great responses so far and lots of products that help cure chapped lips. My ex and I tried most of them on his 7 year old son, but the thing that worked best was the original Chapstick. Its the O. in the black container. There are plenty of products that work a little better and faster if you don't continue to lick your lips and that was the issue we were having with his son. But original Chapstick tastes yucky. I use it on myself when they get really bad because I have a hard time refraining from licking. And it did just the trick with his son. We'd put it on and he'd go to lick them and didn't like it. Soon enough he kicked the habit and his lips healed. I hope you find some advice on here that works for you :)

A layer of Lansinoh (or other brand) lanolin before bed at night -- and during the day if he'll take it. My daughter is a thumb-sucker, and she sucked a giant gash into her thumb when she was sick with a bunch of things all at once, and within a few days of using lanolin on it at night and a few times during the day, it had healed almost completely. And seriously - it was a giant gash. Her whole thumb was dry and swollen and cracking. If it works for nipples on a breastfeeding mom -- it can work on a kids lips (or a kid's thumb that is headed for the mouth, no matter what you do), and safely.
