Hi! My 3 year old is finger sucker and has very dry chapped lips. We have been putting chap stick on them but it doesn't seem to be working. The fingers aren helping. He mostly sucks when he is tired and only I. The car, sleeping of at home. Any recommendations? Thanks!

What can I do next?

My pediatrician told me Chap Stik bramd actually makes them more chapped. My son always fought lip protection so I'd sneak it on a few times a day & after he fell asleep was the most prosuctive. (Love the olive oil idea.) I used vaseline or Aquaphor, which both worked well.

I suggest Lansinoh (lanolin). It's sold at most drug stores (i.e. Walgreens, CVS, etc..) in the baby area. It's used when you have cracked nipples; however, it's great for cracked heels, dry elbows, chapped lips and any other dry type skin problems. It's perfectly fine to be ingested. I used it while breast feeding and continue to use it when everyone has colds, dried summer heels, red noses, etc.... It works wonders!! It's 100% natural. Research it if you like, but I highly recommend it. If you put it on your son's lips at night before bedtime, I pretty guarantee his lips will be much better in the morning and if you apply it a couple times a day you will see the healing take place....

Try Olive Oil.
I do that.
It is food grade and edible.

Carmex actually had fiberglass in it -- makes your lips feel better but the fiberglass cuts your lips and you need to use more. Not good stuff.

Vasoline -- Bag Balm -- also put a sock on his hand to discourage the sucking.

My doctor actually recommended Crisco All Vegetable Shortening (the hard white stuff in a can) for me (adult) since so many things irritate my skin and Crisco is pure vegetable oil made solid. I put some in a small container and carry it with me. I actually washed out the carmex out of one of its container and use that.

I'm going to second lanolin. It is edible but doesn't taste good, so kids are discouraged from licking their lips. I had terrible torn chapped lips last year and nothing was helping. I tried lanolin, and after a week, there was noticeable improvement. Put it on every night and every morning - and any other time you notice that your son's lips look particularly irritated. I now use it every time my lips (or skin elsewhere on the body, too) starts to get chapped to stop the damage in its tracks, and it's the only thing I've found that really, really works.

ETA: Vaseline is not edible. I am not comfortable putting something that should not be eaten on my kids' lips, personally. Carmex is illegal in Europe, so that settled that for me since they have tougher chemical laws there. Good luck.

You might want to try vasoline.

Carmex works well, however, since it's medicated I would only use it at night.

I like the moisture care by Avon.

Our doctor told us to steer clear of the medicated type chapsticks like Carmex but instead use something like Vaseline because it protects the lips from the elements like wind. Another thing our doctor told us to use is Aquaphor Ointment. It works very well.

Hi! Vasoline--- it's a wonder drug for chapped lips. Why not wait until he's asleep and rub some on and see if it looks better in the morning. Then try to keep up with doing it every time he's asleep to keep him unchapped.
