I know you mamas are probably tired(pardon the pun) of another sleep question but I am stumped. My 16mo had is 15 month dr. check last Mon. and received the flu, pneumonia, and hep A shot. Ever since that visit he has awoken around 1 0r 2 am and periodically cries till 5am or so. My husband or I will go in and hold him and he will immediately fall back asleep but after we put him back in his crib, without any problem, after another 20 minutes to half hour he is crying out. We did try motrin before bed and that worked one night. Should we continue to go into his room for fear we are creating a habit? or is this potentially an anxiety thing that is made worse if we don't answer is cries quickly?Does anyone know of any shot/sleep connection? Thanks for reading my sleepless rambling.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and consideration it was really comforting to see others caring. I had called the Dr. the same day I had posted and she thought it could be a number of things, like the getting in the habit of waking, but that I should try the motrin and see if it makes a difference, it didn't. She had also advised that I don't pick him up but soothe him without doing so. My husband made a recording of shhhhhh, yes of him going shhhhh. When the baby would wake he turned it on and that seemed to help. He is sleeping better alleluah! I think the flu shot made him uncomfortable and then after a few days of that he developed some fears of the night.

Hi T.,

I just wanted to mention that if your child has not yet gotten his molars he might just be teething. My daughter 14 mo just finally had a couple of her molars come in and she was waking up crying and needing comfort. I was not sure what it was at first since she has also had a cold, but once the molars came through she went back to her typical sleeping pattern. If you are noticing teething symptoms it might be worth it to try a little Tylenol or whatever you might use for teething pain. If this continues and/or you see other behaviors that concern you, a trip to the pediatrician's might help you feel more at ease. Good luck!

Hi,
Sounds like he is suffering a reaction from the shots. Please make sure you report this to VAERS with all the info from the vaccine and the lot number etc... You can ask the ped. to do it for you but they do not always do it but they have to give out the info to you.
http://www.medalerts.org/ here is the site you can find more info about VAERS and reporting.

You can find a lot of info about these issues on the net but make sure you talk to a knowledgeble doc about vaccine reactions and how to treat them asap. I hope he feels better soon!! If you need help please private mess. me.
Good luck!

Hi T.:) My sixteen month old just had a flu shot and has Not reacted to it well at all. He has been fussy and yes is sleeping differently too. I will say this though he is also teething and I know that this is a huge factor of sleep issues with children. My son is supposed to go back later this month for round two of the flu shot but I am really rethinking this. He is not like my oldest who has never really had any reactions to shots. I would cater to him for now and keep giving him the motrin before bed. Take care.Leah

Have you called your pediatrician? I would, just to be safe. Is he running a fever?

If you think he is teething, please be careful with the Orajel--too much can numb their throat and cause choking. Apply with a Q-Tip ONLY at the site of eruption of the tooth!

My 2nd daughter had a bad reaction to her vaccines. After receiving 5 shots at her 2 month visit she cried inconsolably (I'd say 90% of her waking time was spent crying for 14 months). The Dr told us it wasn't due to the shots,so we continued to give her the shots, but every time she would get her shots it would get worse. The Dr's wouldn't even consider that the shots could be the cause of this. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't have continued the shots (it was that bad! I thought I was going to go crazy from all of crying) 2 months after she received her last group of shots she stopped crying. My advice is go with your gut instinct, if you the shots are causing the sleeplessness you are probably right (despite what your ped will say). I think it is a lot on their little bodies to have all the stuff injected into them and it can cause all kinds of reactions. Good luck to you and your son.

I agree with Ildiko V. With the amount of mercury in the flu shot, it's totally possible he's reacting to it and it's disturbing his rest patterns. Inform your son's Pediatrician and report it to <http://vaers.hhs.gov/>.

Keep an eye on his temperature and his overall mood. I'm sure he'll pull through it, but I know how unnerving it can be. Was he ill in any way at the time he got his vaccines? Even the sniffles can play a big part in that. Talk to your Dr.

my son is the same age and just had the same shots. he did not have any problems sleeping. he was cranky the next day after his shots and actually slept a little later and took a long nap one day for about four hours because he ran a lowgrade fever. may be he is getting more teeth. let him cry himself to sleep. if he is still not sleeping in a couple of days then call the dr's office.

My son is 14 months old. I don't know of any sleep/shot connection, but anything is possible. Is he teething? My son started doing that a few weeks ago & he would sleep as long as he was with me. Once I put him down, he was awake. I too thought it was an anxiety thing and I catered to him. Then one day he opened his mouth really wide & I saw a molar in the back of his mouth. I would recommend feeling around inside his mouth to see if you can feel and teeth coming in. I would also try ora gel. THis works wonders for my son. It dulls the pain and he can relax & sleep. And then you wouldn't have to medicate his whole body just for his teeth. Good luck.

Well, first you need to find out if the flu shot is the one with thimerosal in it or not. Most pediatricians are using the thimerosal-free flu shots for kids, so it is pretty unlikely your kid even got any. I would say that it is more likely that the soreness from the shot made him wake up for a night or two after he had it, and then he's just gotten into the habit of waking up at that time-- especially if he falls asleep as soon as you go in and hold him. By all means call your ped., but I would also consider Ferberizing him and get him out of the habit of waking up. He needs his sleep, and he needs well-rested parents (and so does your daughter)!
