Have any of you mommys had this happen and how long did it last?

For the last 6 days my son ( 12 months ) is skipping his afternoon nap.. I can tell he is tired and fussy but he won't sleep. He usually takes a nap in the am and a nap in the afternoon from 1 - 2 hours. He has a cold.. and we just starting adding a few ounces of dairy milk to his bottles.. He has had looser stools and more gassy since but were not sure if that is why he isn't taking afternoon naps.. He wakes happy and most the day and he's happy until the afternoon.. We just stopped all dairy too see if this resolves that way. I know babies need 2 naps a day. We don't do the cry it out because he is a good sleeper unless he's teething or sick or ??? Any suggestions. He also now goes to sleep 2 hours earlier.

What can I do next?

Well if your son is 12 months, he is creeping up on the age when my children have gone to a longer 2hour afternoon nap ( my 21month old is taking one right now lol) all children are diffrent, smart move cutting out the dairy for now, and soy milk does contain plant estrogins which in LARGE amounts can cause hormonal imbalances ( requires daily consumption in large quantities) rice milk is the best dairy alternitive in my opinion.
If I were you I would cut out the am nap and just give him an early afternoon nap. Stay away from the dairy for now until you have the nap thing situated and re-try later, if it causes issues again you know that he shouldnt be having it. Best of luck;)

Does he wake up at the usual time? Does he sleep thru the night as well as he did before?
If the lack of a nap is the only change I'd guess that it has something to do with his cold. Dairy will thicken mucous. Gassy makes me stay awake at night. Does he eat any solid food for lunch? Has that recently changed?

My granddaughter was actually allergic to milk and not lactose intolerant. That's something to check. We gave her rice milk. Be careful about using soy. It's a common allergy. And the soy does have hormone like something in it. That's why using soy is helpful for menapausal women.

If he's getting more sleep at night he might "think" he doesn't need a nap. I'd guess he goes to sleep earlier because he is tired. I'd try keeping to the earlier schedule. He doesn't have to sleep during the pm nap time. Just put him in his crib. If he cries go in and check that he doesn't need anything and leave. You'll probably have to do this several times. I'm a bit of a maverick. If I were you, I'd put him in his crib and then stay in the room, reading a book or working on handwork.

If that doesn't work in a week or two, I'd keep him awake until his regular bedtime if doing so doesn't cause him difficulty sleeping at night.

I took care of my grandchildren during their baby years so that my daughter could work. It seemed like they changed their nap times from time to time. I was flexible and just went with the flow. You could try putting him down earlier in the morning and/or later in the afternoon.

Notice if anything in his surroundings have changed. Such as a neighbor has started making more noise or he's had different activities. Is his room the same temperature as before? Does he have the same things in his crib?

LDS,

It is very possible that he is transitioning to just one nap a day. Seems to me that both of my kids did the same at the same age.

Try pushing back his morning nap gradually and see if that helps his grumpiness in the afternoon. My daughter is almost 2 and if her nap happens too early in the day she is a nightmare by dinner. Some days she'll fall asleep around 11:30, sleep like a champ and be great for the day with a late lunch. Other days she needs lunch before she naps.

If only these angels came with an owner's manual that had a huge troubleshooting section. That would be great. :)

Hope this helps,
Melissa
