My nearly-two year old was playing the upside down game today when I noticed the brown spot on her tooth (molar) that I thought was food when I've brushed her teeth before was still there, just a bit after brushing tonight. Upon closer inspection, there is also a tiny little hole in the side of her tooth! Is this a cavity?! I'm positively mortified! I cannot believe I've allowed my baby to get a cavity before her second birthday!! How does the dentist even take care of such a young patient's cavity? My six year old hasn't had any dental problems (yet, thank goodness, although I'm obviously a terrible tooth-mom so she better watch out. Geez!) so this is a first for me.

:(

First of all...........YOU are not a bad tooth mom. It happens. I was in the same boat as you at one time!

I was motified when my daughter had a cavity at 3. We fixed it and went on.

She is now pushing 13 (12/27) and since the cavity at 3 on a baby molar, she has had NO cavities. We did get the sealants on her teeth as recommended by her pediatric dentist, Dr. Tipton Asher, and we have had NO issues since.

Believe me, I have cringed when I took her to Dr. Asher because you know how kids can be with brushing and flossing. I have been amazed at how he and his team keep her on track for dental care.

It will be ok.

Don't feel guilty. Children have various kinds of enamel thickness and mouth ph that can cause them to get cavities more easily, so it is not your fault. The pediatric dentist will be able to deal with it no problem.

I know exactly how you feel. My son just got two cavities filled, and he is only three! I have never had a cavity, so I felt like a bad mom when he got two! It was not cheap, but getting them filled was really no big deal. They just gave him some gas, and we were out in half an hour. It was still hard to watch my son being worked on, but he was over it almost instantly. Don't worry, you are not a bad Mom. I would certainly recommend going to a good kid dentist. I live in Amarillo, but I'm sure there are lots of moms in your area that could suggest one. Good luck.

Please don't beat yourself up about your child possibly having a cavity...it happens! You should definitely have your child treated by a reputable pedodontist (pediatric dentist) because they are wonderful at taking care of even the tiniest of mouths! :)

My daughter had a cavity filled at 3. I, too, was horrified, but I see from the responses that it is not that unusual. We had a great experience with Dr. Kogut. His practice is located across the street from Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas (Walnut Hill between Central and Greenville). Good luck!
