Catnaps

Have a question for you on naps. My 2 month old seems to be falling into a catnap pattern a bit. Will fall asleep for 30ish minutes and then wakes up. Usually seems to be tired again in about 40 minutes and will sometimes take another little nap but sometimes he gets too mad. He typically eats every 4 hours during the day. Any ideas on how to help him consolidate his naps a little better? We are swaddling him for nights and naps. He usually falls asleep with a binki and we have been replacing the binki and consoling him if necessary.

Hope you are doing well and enjoying Spring!

Hi J.,

I was just wondering why you are taking the binki away? That could have something to do with it. Have you tried to let him keep the binki and see if he sleeps longer? There is nothing wrong with a binki, it is better than sucking a thumb. You can take away a binki later, but you can never take the thumb :) Just a suggestion.
My son had one until one month before his second b-day and we never had problems, not even his teeth.

Good luck and let me know
S.

It is normal for babies this young to catnap. I brought up the same issue with my pediatrician when my daughter was that age and I was told that babies don't settle into a good napping schedule until around 6 months. Sure enough, shortly after turning 6 months she settled into a 2 nap a day schedule. It will happen naturally as he gets older.

That's what babies that age do is little catnaps all day long! Our son used to do that too! Our pediatrician said that is fine. The baby will do what the baby needs. If a 30 minute or 10 minute catnap is what he or she needs, they will fall asleep! Dont' worry so much about the napping schedule. Just go with the flow and let the baby do what his or her body wants to do!

Hello J. ~ My little one just turned 4 months old; he is also a catnapper and I'm hoping he will settle more into a longer napping pattern..otherwise he's a very happy baby (my daughter now 4 years old only slept if rocked or held) anyway as far as eating; I do nurse & typically during the day he will only nurse every 3 - 4 hours (he weighs 18 pounds) at night well he takes his last feeding between 11:30 & midnight & will sleep until about 5:30am or 6:00am before he wakes up for a feeding...(he's done this since birth...more than doubled his birth weight before he was 2 weeks old) I talked to his pediatrician about this & she said he's healthy, gaining weight if he wants to sleep let him sleep & get some rest (my daughter nursed every 2-3 hours unil she was 12 months old)....anyway, if he likes his binky let him have it. Good luck!

This sounds normal. No one expects a baby this young to have a routine yet. If you're breastfeeding, you need to feed him much more often than every 4 hours, though!

Hi J.-

I had a catnapper, too. Unfortunately, I don't have any tips to offer you to make the naps longer - nothing I did made her naps last :) I can offer you the assurance that it will get better with time. My daughter really settled into a nap routine around 5 months, and is a great sleeper now at 18 months. Good luck, I know it is hard to get much done when you have such a small window of time during naps, but it will get better before you know it!

Patience my dear...

Every baby is different...

Some sleep for long periods of time, some tend to cat nap... You don't say how he's sleeping at night...

Like you said, he's 2 months old... They need a lot of sleep... The consolidated nap times will come with time.

Hello J., This is perfectly normal for a 2 month old. They don't establish the 2 nap a day patteren until about 5-6 months old. Each child is different and the nap pattern he is setting now, will slowly lengthen, and he will set his own pace. Get into a habit of putting him down in his bed after he falls asleep, with soothing music in the background. This will make it much easier for him to sleep on his own as he matures. I would suggest that you read up on child behavior. It seems that you are trying to adapt to a 2 year old, rather than a 2 month old. Sucking is a natural craving at this age, and we can never fight against nature. Good luck and enjoy, they grow up much faster than we think.
