J.K.
It is normal for adult male cats to pee that way. Even with a really big box, they would still tend to go to the edges. We use a covered litter box which keeps it all contained.
male cat 2 yo. not abnormally huge like those moster maine coones or anything just a rescue tabby.
Lately When he uses the litter box he pees along the one side and it splashes over. I generally scoop out the box every other day. It is simply that i'm not scooping it enough? my mother insists I need a sterilite under the bed sweater box, and that I should fill that with cat litter, I don't know it that would help or not.
Can anyone help me decide what to do?? tx
only the one cat and his litter box is in the basement NOT under my bed, I was just trying to describe the box.
thank you very much, I was worried about the answers I might get but found everything very helpful thanks!

My cat also does this once in awhile. No rhyme or reason for it. I scoop the box several times a day because I know some cats don't like to use it if it's too dirty so it can't be that. The only thing I can figure is the box is too small but I don't want a huge one so I deal with it. Like I said, he only does it once in awhile so it's not a big deal.
My only suggestion is maybe scooping a little more often and see if that helps. Have you recently changed litter brands or type? Some cats are picky about that too. Other than that, I don't know.
Good luck!!
A covered box will solve the problem.
My female cat likes to pee on the side of the box. Doesn't matter how much I scoop. I have a box with a lid and a door hat keeps it from splashing over.
My cat likes to pee near the side. It's the way she is. Silly girl!
Litter box with a cover. My cats are pretty big and I have one of the round ones.
He is getting pee outside the box even if he is in the box.
Because he pees on the side, of the box. Not in the center of it.
Put a pee-pad, UNDER the litter box....to catch and absorb any stray pee that splatters outside the box. And then it won't get on the floor.
Pet stores have pee-pads for pets.
Its just like, when babies are in a high chair... they manage to splatter food on the floor, even if they are eating ON the high-chair food tray. So, many Moms put a plastic floor covering on the floor right UNDER the high chair, so that the floor does not get soiled.
So same with the litter box. Just put a pee pad, under the littler box, to catch any stray pee splatters. And then you just throw it away.
My cats, used to pee, in their litter box, but not RIGHT in the center of it. They pee'd on the side of the litter box too. In the corners. And some pee would splatter outside the box. I had a big pee pad, under it. As a precaution and just common sense.
My cats, did not like those covered litter boxes.
Clean out/scoop put the pee clumps of the litter box, more frequently.
Everyday.
I assume, you only have 1 cat. Since that one cat is the only one you mentioned.
And its not like you can tell a cat "hey, pee in the CENTER of the box."
I don't know what you mean by your Mom saying you need a Sterilite under the bed sweater box.
You mean, your litter box is under, the bed?????
The only thing that worked for us was to get a box with a cover. We buy the largest size they come in, even if they aren't big cats, so they have lots of room.
We don't put the filters and stuff in them on the top because they really don't do any good and just make the box stuffy. We leave it open and only have the cover to keep the sand in the box from our overzealous scratchers/buriers and to keep them from missing entirely and going over the edge.
I see several people have suggested a covered box. This is a good idea, but a word of caution, if you try that keep an eye out, one of my cats REFUSES to use a covered box.
I would just get him a bigger box with higher sides.
Our female cat is an indoor/outdoor cat. She "marks her territory" outside on a tree, pretty high up. Sometimes, in the litter box, she does the same thing, missing the box entirely and hitting the wall! It did help to get a taller box, actually the lower half of the type with the cover. (But she didn't care for the cover.) She sometimes still hits the wall.
I saw some ideas myself here. I like the idea of getting a tall container and cutting a hole in the side maybe half way up, so it would be above "the litter line." Then she can "mark" the sides if she wants to and, no clean-up.
Anyway, if your cat marks his territory outside, he may be doing a version of that in his box.
Ideally, you should have 1 more litter box than you have cats - so for just 1 cat, you would have a second box. And the box would be 1 and 1/2 to 2 times the length of the cat, including the tail. I have had people use the large Rubbermaid containers as litter boxes, they just cut a "door" in the side for the cat to get in and out. Scoop the litter at least once a day (twice is better) and dump out all the litter and change it completely once a week.
I would also suggest a box with cover or even a Rubbermaid container that is high enough on the sides that it would hard for him to straddle. Also scoop everyday.
It doesn't sound like a scooping issue. It sounds like he's just not pointing down when he pees or changed his position to be closer to the side of the box. You may want to change to a covered box of something with higher sides. A bigger box might not help because he'll just position himself close to the side and do the same thing.
If you do change to a bigger container with higher sides you may have to cut down 1 side a bit so he'll be able to get in and out easily.
