Cat and Her Kittens

My cat keeps trying to move her kittens. I have her in the laundry room with a baby gate up so she can come and go but her kittens are safe from the family dog and my 2 year old. She keeps trying to carry them over the baby gate (with my dog right there) and put them under my bed. I don't know if I should let her do this (my dog can get under the bed) or just keep the laundry room door shut so she has to stay in there. Any suggestions?

She is going to continue no matter what you do. Is there any way to keep your bedroom door closed once she gets them under your bed? Or put the gate in your doorway?

You never know why a cat moves the kittens. It is really odd where they want to be. It can be sound, temp, light or activity in the area..

I agree that if you can close the bedroom door and keep it safe, then let her move her babies. She has found her own space and will keep trying to move them. (Plus I'm sure the dog knows it's place!)

We had a mama cat who wanted to move her kittens because 'her spot' was too busy and interrupted by excited children wanting to see the kitties...

I agree with Laurie that you keep her in there but make the environment more calm and secluded.

If this was my house, I would allow the mother to bring her kittens to the quiet, under-bed, place she has picked out. If she is comfortable with the spot, she can keep her kittens safe. And, believe me, she would not hesitate to let any dog know to leave _her_ spot alone. Another option is to arrange a corner of your closet (or the closet of her favorite person) and see if she will use that instead: with the baby gate left at the front of the closet.

Good luck!

Get a crate. one large enough that her and the kittens are comfortable, but small enough for your mamma kat to feel as though her and her children have their very own space away from everyone. You can open it to let her out and close it when she wants to be in there with her babies. This also prevents your baby and your dog from having easy access to her. Another suggestion is a cat tree with a "clubhouse" on top for her and the kittens to stay in.

The crate idea may seem cruel, but she is looking to feel safe and think about the size and space most limit themselves to to feel this way...

Good Luck...
